An esteemed engineering executive, Dr. Collins was aligned with Xylum Corporation in Scarsdale, New York, as the vice president of technology since 1996. Leveraging his talents, he formerly held the prestigious title of the vice president of engineering for Kollmorgen Inc. in New Windsor, New York, a century-old company that specializes in a variety of products, solutions and services throughout the world. Additionally, Dr. Collins served as an engineering manager for Perkin-Elmer in Wilton, Connecticut, where he was recognized for his role in improving an instrument originally designed by the organization that would later correct the National Bureau of Standards tables. A wavelength calibration algorithm dramatically improved positioning accuracy of a monochromator.
Celebrated for his expertise, Dr. Collins went on to obtain seven patents in his field. Among his inventions, he developed an optimization method for scientific instruments used to measure the concentrations of elements in samples. This was later used in detecting boron in steel as well as improving the detection limits of all elements by a factor of two. The optimization algorithm and wavelength calibration were both patented. Furthermore, Dr. Collins has disseminated many of his research findings by authoring scholarly articles in numerous scientific journals.
Dr. Collins' love for science and engineering stemmed from his youth. Fascinated by theoretical chemistry, he pursued a formal education at Holy Cross College in Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1971. Dr. Collins was subsequently accepted to the prestigious Princeton University in New Jersey, where he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976. He concluded his academic efforts in 1983, having received a Master of Science in computer science at New York University. While at Princeton, he spent a year in the research group of future Nobel laureate John People with whom he published four papers.
As an extension to his full-time commitments, Dr. Collins is an active member of the American Chemical Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Eminently qualified in his field, he received a graduate traineeship from the National Science Foundation from 1971 to 1972 and undertook an NSF fellowship between 1976 and 1977 for research in theoretical Chemistry at Berkeley. In addition to his studies, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve in the 400th chemical laboratory.
