David R. Huchthausen Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Huchthausen with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Huchthausen celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Combining his passion for art and sculpture with architecture and historic preservation, Mr. Huchthausen has enjoyed a long and successful career for five decades. After attaining AA and BS degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Illinois State University, he spent two years as a Fulbright Research Scholar at the firm of J. and L. Lobmeyr in Vienna, Austria and lectured throughout Europe. After returning to the U.S. in 1988, he became Design Director at Milropa Studios in New York. From 1980 to 1989 he served Professor of Art at Tennessee Technical University, where he established a major glass program. After his teaching career, Mr. Huchthausen moved his sculpture studio to Seattle Washington and founded Huchthausen Studios, where he still produces his art, earning International recognition for his fabricated glass sculpture. He also utilized his creative talents to serve as a curatorial consultant at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, from 1976 to 1990 and as a consultant for several other museums in the U.S. and Europe. Following his love of architecture, he renovated several historic buildings in Seattle and became managing partner and general contractor at W/H Properties, specializing in commercial and residential real estate development, property management and lease negotiations from 1985 to 1996.

After developing an expertise in commercial mixed-use buildings, rehabs, renovations and historical buildings, Mr. Huchthausen founded Somerset Properties Inc. in 1994 serving as its president and managing partner, through which he owned and managed several commercial and industrial properties in Seattle. His largest project was the renovation and adaptive reuse of the 150,000 square foot Bemis Brothers Bag factory, converting the top two floors into artists live/work studios. In 2013 Mr. Huchthausen's entrepreneurial spirit led him to a new journey in hospitality as the owner of the Bamboo Paradise Beach Resort, a small beach resort in Cebu, Philippines, where he spends part of the year.

Mr. Huchthausen's artwork is widely recognized Internationally and is featured in the permanent collections of more than 75 museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C, the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco and the High Museum in Atlanta, as well as the Hokkaido Museum in Sapporo, Japan and the Museum of Fine Art in Dusseldorf, Germany. His work has also been exhibited in hundreds of one-man and group shows worldwide. Mr. Huchthausen has notably published several books as well, including "Americans in Glass," – Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin, "Huchthausen: A Retrospective - Alden B. Dow Museum, Midland, Michigan", "Huchthausen" - Contemporary Art Niki, Tokyo and Leo Kaplan Modern, New York and "Art Deco Glass – The Huchthausen Collection" – Tacoma Museum of Glass, Tacoma, Washington.

Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mr. Huchthausen has been actively involved in Urban Planning in Seattle, serving on the board of the SODO Business Association and a member of the SODO transportation committee. SODO, which means "south of the dome," is recognized as a vibrant commercial, industrial, office and retail area. Mr. Huchthausen also chaired the Greater Duwamish Planning Committee and is a member of the Manufacturing Industrial Council's executive committee. He remains a strong advocate for the National Trust for Historical Preservation.

Mr. Huchthausen is an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin, where he attained an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in 1972 and 1974, respectively. He later completed a Master of Fine Arts at Illinois State University in 1977. He has been a member of the American Craft Council and the Glass Art Society. He was bestowed with grants from the Woodson Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, received an Illinois State University Stein fellowship, a Fulbright research scholarship and a University of Applied Arts Fulbright scholarship.
