Now a professor emeritus, Dr. Nathanson taught at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine for 19 years before retiring in 1996. A talented and vibrant educator, he came from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, where he rose from assistant to full professor between 1968 and 1979. Additionally, he spent two years as an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston between 1966 and 1968. Dr. Nathanson continues to serve the community as the president and chief executive officer of Oncology Consultant in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In retirement, Dr. Nathanson also became active on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research, a position he held from 2002 to 2011. He later served as a member of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science with Amgen, Inc., a multinational biopharmaceutical company headquartered in California.
Renowned for his research, Dr. Nathanson has made several advances in biology, the chemoprevention of melanoma, combination chemotherapy and immunotherapy of cancer, as well as clinical trials design. His paper on immunotherapy of Melanoma in Cancer Chemotherapy Reports in 1972 was one of the earliest such studies. His work has been documented in approximately 150 peer-reviewed journals as author or co-author. He has also edited five books in his area of expertise. Furthermore, Dr. Nathanson has published 40 Review papers, has contributed over 130 abstracts and letters to the editor, and has served on the editorial board for such prominent peer-reviewed journals as Seminars in Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of Cancer Education.
Involved in various civic initiatives, Dr. Nathanson is a former trustee of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, and the Cambridge School of Weston. He was also a counselor for the Cambridge Historical Society, where he now serves as an advisor since 2004, and was a counselor for the Massachusetts Society of Medical Research and the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol, Rhode Island. He is currently the Treasurer, Secretary, and Reunion Committee Chair, of the Harvard College Class of 1950. He remains a member of the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement since 2006 and member of the Board of Directors of the Harvard Alumni Association since 2018.
Educated at Harvard College, Dr. Nathanson received a Bachelor of Arts in 1950. After a year in the Harvard graduate program in Physics, he transferred to the University of Chicago, where he completed a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1955. Additional educational pursuits include a residency at Stanford University Medical School, where he served as Chief Resident in Medicine in 1962-1963. He was a Fellow in Medical Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (then the Children's Cancer Research Foundation) from 1963 to 1966. Dr. Nathanson is board certified in Internal Medicine and Oncology. He notably served in the United States Army between 1956 and 1958, serving as Captain and Company Commander in the Second Battalion Combat Team before spending another five years in the Reserves. He currently is a participant in the Million Veteran Program for medical research.
An elected fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Nathanson is also a professional member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. Other memberships include the Harvard Humanist Community, the Harvard Faculty Club, and formerly, the Seawanaka Corinthian Yacht Club.
Dr. Nathanson received grants from the National Cancer Institute from 1964 to 1992. He was later the recipient of several Distinguished Service Awards for Cancer Research from the Veterans Affairs Review Board between 1974 and 1978 and received a Distinguished Service Award from the Winthrop University Hospital in 1993. Additionally, he was honored with a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Cambridge School of Weston in 2006 and a Historical Preservation Award from the Cambridge Historical Commission in 2011. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Nathanson has been showcased in over 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
