Backed by an interest in agriculture and genetics, Dr. Ghavami excels as chief scientific officer for Eurofins BioDiagnostics, Inc. In his role, he oversees research and development, develops new services and supports the business in order to promote efficiency and profitability. Prior to obtaining his current position, he worked as the manager of the agrigenomics lab at Eurofins Biodiagnostics Inc., oversee the day-to-day genetic tests to the agricultural community. Before moving to industry Dr. Ghavami was a research associate in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Minnesota, where he studied recombination in maize and nuclear-cytoplasmic interaction in wheat, plant-pathogen interaction in cereals.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Ghavami gained valuable expertise in the field as a research assistant professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University and as a postdoctoral research associate at North Dakota State, Simon Fraser University's Department of Biological Sciences, and the National Research Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Tehran, Iran. In a career filled with highlights, it is difficult to pick one that stands out among the rest. In addition to increasing revenue of agrigenomics lab at Eurofins BioDiagnostics between 30 and 50 percent each year since he joined the organization, he created the Microbiome Laboratory at Eurofins and developed different SNP panels for genetic purity and variety identification in vegetable and row crops, including corn, soybeans, peppers, tomatoes and spinach. He has also led several science, technology and reading programs in agriculture regarding advancing the genetic movement.
After earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tehran and a Master of Science from Isfahan University of Technology in 1995 and 1998, respectively, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular genetics from the University of Tehran in 2004, Dr. Ghavami immigrated to Canada to further his education. Between 2005 and 2006, he pursued postdoctoral studies in Canada before relocating to the United States to work.
Throughout his career, he has also contributed to a plethora of publications, including "Fast-forward genetics by radiation hybrids to saturate the locus regulating nuclear-cytoplasmic compatibility in Triticum," "Mixed model association mapping for Fusarium head blight resistance in Tunisian-derived durum wheat populations." and "A review on salt tolerant resources in wild relatives of common wheat." In recent years, he was also invited to speak on advancements in sunflower breeding and DNA-based IP protection and infringement detection.
To remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Ghavami aligns himself with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Phytobiome Alliance and Analytical Excellence through Industry Collaborations. Devoted to his community, he supports charities in his home country of Iran to foster education. In light of his outstanding body of work, he has been honored with several research grants, as well as inclusion in the Iranian Genetics Society and a Presidential and Travel Award through North Dakota State University.
