Bishop Buckon is a tenured auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese for Military Services (AMS), USA headquartered in Washington, DC. Following his episcopal ordination on February 22, 2011, he assumed his duties as the Episcopal Vicar for the western region of the AMS. He currently oversees Catholic-specific religious support operations at 71 chapels, 6 hospitals, and 2 prisons on Department of Defense installations located in 16 States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. His life-long commitment to the U.S. Armed Forces and ministry began in college. While attending John Carroll University he was a cadet in the Army's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC); and while a senior he experienced the initial call to the priesthood. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army in both the Infantry and Transportation Corps. His first overseas assignment to Germany entailed multinational training exercises in Denmark, Canada, Norway, and England. After completing his time as a Company Commander, he left the Army in 1982 and traveled to more than 100 countries, and 6 of the 7 continents. Bishop Buckon eventually became a cosponsored seminarian in 1989 studying for both the Diocese of Cleveland and the AMS. During his time in the seminary, he was a US. Army Reserve Officer and a Chaplain Candidate. He was ordained a priest on May 27th, 1995; and one year later, in 1996, he was accessioned into the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps. Bishop Buckon notably served on active duty in three branches of the Army; and has 28 years of commissioned service. He has 3 National Defense Ribbons!
Bishop Buckon was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Cleveland where he attended Gesu Elementary School and Cathedral Latin School before matriculating for his collegiate studies. He subsequently received a Bachelor of Science in biology at John Carroll University; a Bachelor of Arts in history at Cleveland State University; a Bachelor of Art in philosophy at Borromeo College; and a Master of Divinity and a Master of Arts in church history at Saint Mary's Seminary. His military education includes the Infantry Officers Basic and Advance Courses; the Chaplain Corps Basic Course, and the Chaplain Corps Career Course. He is a graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College. This bishop has the distinct honor of having worn both the Parachutist Badge and the highly coveted Ranger Tab!
A professional member of the Association of the United States Army and the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps Regimental Association, Bishop Buckon is also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Catholic War Veterans. Furthermore, he is a knight commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a fourth degree Knight of Columbus. He also serves as the episcopal moderator for the Military Council of Catholic Women-Worldwide, which is a nonprofit subsidiary of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA.
As a chaplain, Bishop Buckon ventured on assignments throughout the U.S. and abroad in such places as Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Iraq and Korea. For his efforts, he was decorated numerous times, earning a Legion of Merit. Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, a Joint Service Commendation Medal and an Army Commendation Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. Bishop Buckon was also inducted into the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps National Hall of Fame in 2016 and was named as the Man of the Year by the Cathedral Latin School Alumni Association in 2012.
In a career suffused with highlights, Bishop Buckon is most proud of the time he spent on two deployments to Iraq, where he believes he made a considerable difference in the lives of so many American soldiers. His episcopal motto is, "Opere et Veritate." It is from "1 John 3:18" and is translated to say, "Deed and Truth." He said that he will continue to serve those who serve in deed and truth until he is ordered to retire.
