In his early years, Dr. Mirhom worked diligently to score well on school examinations to attend a prestigious university in his native country of Egypt. He placed 12th among 60,000 students when testing to be inducted into Alexandria University. Graduating from the pharmacy program with the highest score in his class, he received a Bachelor of Arts in pharmacy and pharmaceutical chemistry in 1961. A year later, he obtained a diploma in industrial pharmacy from Alexandria University. After accruing several years in his field, he returned to higher education and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacy from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1971.
Since 1995, Dr. Mirhom has excelled as vice president and chief science officer of Bio-Botanica, Inc., in which he specializes in medicinal plants and their application to medicine, inventing six USA patents. Prior to this appointment, he worked as a professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy at Cairo University in Egypt for 45 years before attaining emeritus status. As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Mirhom has provided lectures throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, South Africa and several international venues.
To remain abreast of shifts in an ever-changing industry, Dr. Mirhom is an active member of the American Society of Pharmacognosy, and is further professionally affiliated with the Pharmaceutical Society of Egypt and the Society of Pharmaceutical Science in Egypt. Throughout his career, he has been most proud of the work he has conducted on the metabolism of steroid hormones on human placenta. He has supervised a considerable number of M.Sc. and Ph.D. theses and has more than 74 publications.
