MacKenzie with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia between 1973 and 1974, Mr. Porter flourished in a tremendously successful career in law that has spanned decades. Since 2006, he has been operating out of his private practice, representing clients at the Law Offices of J. Ridgely Porter III in matters of real estate, maritime and international law. Mr. Porter formerly held the positions of an associate and partner at Carr and Porter LLC in Portsmouth, Virginia between 1974 and 2005 before serving of counsel for one year with the firm.
Among his other notable achievements, Mr. Porter has excelled as the owner of Cattle Farms since 1988. He has also been active as the president of Virginia International Terminals LLC, which supervises the ports throughout the commonwealth of Virginia. In this capacity, he successfully organized various trade missions and negotiated trade agreements on its behalf. Additionally, Mr. Porter was appointed as the chairman of the Chesapeake General Hospital, now known as Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, a premier medical center in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Passionate about public service, Mr. Porter was recruited as a crusade chairman for the American Cancer Society, the director for Junior Achievement USA, the director of the English Speaking Union and both the president and director of Alliance Française between 2017 and 2018. He was further noted as the Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club. He is active in the Pilgrims of the United States, an organization of 1,000 influential Americans who promote economic, cultural and social ties to Great Britain. He is a former Senior Warden of St. John's Episcopal Church.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Porter earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Virginia and a law degree at Washington and Lee University. He has been admitted to practice law by the Virginia Bar Association, with which he has also been engaged in the section on international law. Most notably, he has found success as a member and the past president of the Portsmouth Bar Association.
