Now retired, Mr. Hanson served as an esteemed attorney of nearly four decades with extensive experience in corporate workouts and reorganizations, related litigation, and buying and selling distressed companies. During the latter part of his career, he worked at Latham & Watkins LLP, where he excelled as a partner from 1988 until 2012. He founded the firm's Chicago office creditors' rights insolvency practice in 1988, successfully expanding it into one of the most prominent practices of its kind in the U.S. Mr. Hanson represented many of the world's largest banks and financial institutions in major workouts, bankruptcy reorganizations, and related litigation throughout the United States and in cross-border matters.
Mr. Hanson was the chairperson of the firm's Audit Committee between 1998 and 2005. Prior to being recruited by Latham & Watkins, he spent more than a decade at Sidley & Austin in Chicago, beginning as an associate in 1975, shortly after graduating from law school, and then as a partner between 1983 and 1988. It was during his tenure at Sidley that Mr. Hanson expanded his practice from financial litigation to corporate reorganizations, ultimately rising to head Sidley's Chicago office insolvency group as a young partner.
Renowned for his expertise, Mr. Hanson assisted clients in matters involving a wide array of industries involving nearly 20 sectors of the economy in chapter 7 and chapter 11 bankruptcies, restructurings, and workouts. Experiencing the good fortune of success in one big case after another, he garnered a reputation as a skilled litigator, often defending matters regarding fraudulent conveyance and lender liability claims. Among his many accomplishments during his career, Mr. Hanson successfully reorganized the two largest gas-fired power plants in North America. As one of his Latham partners put it, "Ron is one of the finest creditor-side insolvency lawyers in the country, and has masterminded some of the most creative restructuring solutions in the modern era."
Apart from his full-time responsibilities, Mr. Hanson has contributed articles to various law journals as an expert in his field. He also served as an official advisor to the National Conference on Uniform State Laws regarding the revision and repeal of Article 6 of the Uniform Commercial Code. In retirement, Mr. Hanson has been active with the Golfview Hills Homes Association as its president since 2018, having previously served in the same capacity from 2002 until 2005 and between 2014 and 2015.
Mr. Hanson prepared for his career by receiving a Bachelor of Arts at Saint Olaf College, summa cum laude, in 1972, with majors in political science, Latin and German, in which he remains fluent. While at St. Olaf, he was elected to membership in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Likewise, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence at the University of Chicago, cum laude, in 1975, and was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif legal honor society. Mr. Hanson has been admitted to practice law by the Illinois Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh and 10th Circuits and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where he also qualified as a member of its Trial Bar.
Maintaining membership with several industry-related organizations throughout his career, Mr. Hanson has been affiliated with the American Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association, and the Chicago Bar Association. Celebrated for his expertise, Mr. Hanson has been listed in several prominent legal publications, including Best Lawyers in America and Practical Law Company. He was also recognized as a Top 100 Professional by the International Biographical Centre, as a Top Lawyer in Chicago by the National Law Journal and was highlighted in the Chicago Tribune for his expertise.
