A veteran attorney backed by years of expertise, Mr. Schwendiman excels as corporate legal counsel for Parkland Corporation, Canada's and the Caribbean's largest independent supplier and marketer of fuel and petroleum products, for which he provides comprehensive legal support for its rapidly expanding U.S. operations. As part of his duties, Mr. Schwendiman reviews and drafts company policies, conducts mergers and acquisitions, including due diligence assessments, and negotiates various supply agreements for regional and national accounts including with major grocery chains, retailers, trucking companies, airlines, cruise lines, and gas stations. Over the years, Mr. Schwendiman has argued before the Utah and Wyoming Supreme Courts, several state and federal district courts, the Utah Board of Oil, Gas & Mining, and various municipal courts.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Schwendiman gained valuable experience as a vice president in the legal department of Goldman Sachs. Between 2013 and 2019, he honed his skills negotiating trading contracts that facilitated high speed, high volume physical and financial derivative transactions in the oil, natural gas and liquids, minerals, base and precious metals, coal and the wind and solar power industries. He mentored and trained junior team members. Earlier in his career, Mr. Schwendiman worked as general counsel for Summit Energy LLC, a Utah-based exploration and production company, and as an attorney and partner for Weber & Schwendiman, LLP, for which he practiced in various areas of law, including consumer protection, criminal defense, employment disputes, title opinion drafting and bankruptcy filings.
Throughout his career, Mr. Schwendiman also found success as a clerk for the criminal division of the Wyoming Attorney General's Office, and as a first lieutenant in the JAG Corps of the Texas States Guard. As a military attorney, he provided legal advice to command staff, assisted government authorities during state emergencies and was decorated with the Military Emergency Management Specialist Badge, State Guard Association of the United States Military Justice Medal, Humanitarian Award, Physical Fitness Ribbon, Texas State Guard Association Ribbon, Regional Basic Orientation Training Ribbon, SGAUS Unit Citation, and Governor's Unit Citation. He was deployed to the State Operations Center during Hurricane Harvey.
Among Mr. Schwendiman's published works include the biography Uncle of the Prophet: The Life and Achievements of John Smith, the harrowing unit history Saving Lives, Saving Honor: The 39th Evacuation Hospital during World War II, and the science fiction fantasy novel The Battle of Otok.
Mr. Schwendiman earned a Bachelor of Arts in history through Brigham Young University in 2006. Subsequently, he graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 2009. He is licensed to practice law in Utah, Texas, and North Dakota. He is an Eagle Scout, former president of the J. Rueben Clark Law Society, Wyoming Chapter, and former president of the Wyoming Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He is supported by his wife, Joanna, and three sons, Joseph, Luke and Ryker.
