Dr. Winicov Harrington retired as a research professor after a very rewarding career from Arizona State University (ASU) in molecular biology and plant biology. This came after nearly 20 years as a professor of microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Nevada in the school of medicine teaching biochemistry and molecular biology. Previously Dr. Winicov Harrington held academic appointments at the Fels Research Institute and Temple University School of Medicine and position at the Institute of Cancer research in Philadelphia between 1972 and 1978. Apart from her work in the classroom she carried out research and published in the areas of biochemistry, nucleic acids, molecular biology and plant biotechnology.
At the time with few tenured women scientists in higher education, Dr. Winicov Harrington required tenacity and long 'hands-on' hours to accomplish both teaching and the research, which she loved. She is incredibly proud of her work with salt tolerance. This work has been cited many times and has been followed by other professionals from all over the world. Some of this research led to Dr. Winicov Harrington's patent award in plant biotechnology.
From her research, Dr. Winicov Harrington penned numerous articles in scientific journals. Moreover she has published several short stories, newspaper articles and a food column for many years. Additionally, she authored a book, titled "How to Eat Healthy and Well for Less Than $5 a Day." In addition to having been elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Winicov Harrington has maintained her memberships with the American Society of Plant Biologists, the International Society of Plant Molecular Biology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society for Microbiology and the American Society of Biological Chemists.
Ms. (Butelis) Winicov Harrington initially studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Arts in microbiology in 1956. She subsequently graduated with a Master of Science in bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958. She concluded her academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Winicov Harrington has been featured in the 55th through 61st editions of Who's Who in America, the 20th edition of Who's Who in the West and the 18th and 25th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
