Supported by more than three decades of industry experience, Dr. Dal Porto has excelled as a professor of music at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales since 2001. He is also the Music Department coordinator of music theory and composition and frequently serves as a guest composer and conductor. Teaching since the late 1980s, he formerly held faculty appointments at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Northern State University in South Dakota and Texas State University in San Marcos. Likewise, Dr. Dal Porto has been an active participant at various conferences and meetings as a presenter in his area of expertise.
A prominent composer, pianist and conductor, Dr. Dal Porto began experimenting by playing his father's accordion as a child. In high school, he taught himself to play the piano and ultimately took lessons at the age of 18 when entering college. Since that time, his music has been performed by many instrumental and vocal ensembles throughout the world, with commissions from the Orchestra of Southern Utah, the College Orchestra Directors Association and the Pemigewasset Choral Society of New Hampshire. Dr. Dal Porto also released several CDs, including his most recent, "Peace, Nature & Renewal: The Music of Mark Dal Porto" in 2019 through Navona Records, which took six years to complete. Dr. Dal Porto studied at California State University in Sacramento, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in piano performance and a Master of Arts in theory and composition in 1978 and 1981, respectively. He also attained a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition at the University of Texas in 1985. Supported by several professional affiliations, Dr. Dal Porto is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, the Society of Composers, Inc., the College Music Society and the American Composer's Forum.
In honor of his many musical and teaching accomplishments, Dr. Dal Porto received a multitude of Certificates of Excellence in band, choral, orchestral and chamber composition through The American Prize organization. He was also a First Prize Winner of the College Orchestra Directors Association in 2013 for his orchestral work "Song of Eternity." In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Dal Porto is most proud to have met his wife, Tracy, a college professor of music, while they were working together at the same university.
