As a teenager, Dr. Burris decided that he wanted to pursue a career in biological sciences. He later pursued a Bachelor of Science in biology and paleontology at Brown University before completing an internship with the National Institute of Health, with which he later worked for five summers in several different laboratories. In 1974, Dr. Burris graduated from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University with a Doctor of Medicine.
After garnering valuable expertise in the fields of medicine and education, Dr. Burris currently excels as a clinical professor of medicine and pharmacology at Georgetown University's School of Medicine. Throughout his time with Georgetown, he has honed his specialties in hypertension, various abnormalities of the lipids, clinical pharmacology and geriatrics. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Burris is especially proud of helping revise federal standards for the protection of human subjects in research and being elected as a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Burris is affiliated with the American Geriatric Society, the Council on Circulation of the American Heart Association, the International Society of Hypertension, the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and the American College of Physicians, for which he is designated as an emeritus member. Alongside his exceptional work in medical education, he contributes to his community as a board member with the Audubon Naturalist Society and as an adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America. In the coming years, Dr. Burris intends to enjoy his well-deserved retirement together with occasional consulting in medical research and education.
