Dr. Potts boasts impressive scholarly credentials, having held the position of a professor and the dean of the College of Business and Economics at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, with which he was employed for close to four decades. Teaching on the River Falls campus between 1976 and 2010, he accepted the role of dean in 2009, which he maintained until his retirement in 2014. During this time, Dr. Potts led various initiatives, including the establishment of the College of Business and Economics and the Master of Business Administration program. Likewise, he assisted in the university's accreditation by the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business.
In 2018, Dr. Potts established Public Access to Health Care (PATH) as a community organizer and co-founder. (httpS://path-wi.org) A nonprofit organization in Wisconsin, its mission is to increase access to affordable, high quality health care and prescription medicine. Frustrated with how difficult the insurance industry can be for individuals trying to acquire coverage, Dr. Potts and the other co-founders hope to create real change, not only in Wisconsin, but throughout the United States.
Apart from his commitments in the classroom, Dr. Potts notably served as the associate director of the Center for Pacific Rim Studies in River Falls from 1990 until 2000. He later served as the president of GEM International Inc. (a trading company) and as the director of Master of Management in River Falls in 2001. Additionally, Dr. Potts has contributed numerous articles to various peer reviewed journals.
Dr. Potts studied at MacMurray College, from which he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1972. He subsequently transferred to Iowa State University, where he received both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 1974 and 1976, respectively. To support his subsequent professional endeavors, Dr. Potts has been a member of the American Economic Association. In recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field, he was named as the Distinguished Teacher of Year by the graduating seniors at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in 1982, and was honored several years later with an Outstanding Teacher Award by students in the College of Business and Economics in 1989.
