In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Srivastava was presented with the Outstanding Research Award from the Indian Association Research Foundation in 2020, the Baxendale Innovation Award from The University of Kansas in 2017, the Notable Contribution to the AIS Literature Award from the AIS Section of the American Accounting Association in 2017, Research Excellence Award of the School of Business, University of Kansas, in 1997, and again in 1996, Notable Contribution to AI & Expert Systems Research in Accounting from the AI/ES Section of the American Accounting Association in 1996, and the Glory of India Award from the International Friendship Society in New Delhi, India, in 2010.
Prior to his retirement in 2018, he held a number of positions at The University of Kansas between 1982 and 2018, such as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, and the Ernst and Young professor of accounting and information systems and as the director of the Ernst and Young Center for Auditing Research and Advanced Technology. At the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Srivastava worked as a teaching assistant in the school's division of accounting from 1980 to 1982 and a teaching assistant and instructor of mathematics from 1979 until 1980. Prior to his accounting career, Dr. Srivastava served as an Assistant Professor of physics at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science–Pilani, India, from 1963 to1968, and as a teaching assistant and instructor at the Oregon State University from 1968 to 1973, and as a Post-Doctoral Fellow/Instructor and Senior Instructor in the Department of Physics in the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada, from 1973 to 1979.
Beyond his primary endeavors, Dr. Srivastava flourished as a visiting professor at the University of Sydney in Australia in 2003, 2007, 2013, and 2019, at the University of South Florida in 2011, at the University of Paris-Sorbonne in 2006, at the University of Central Florida in 2005, at the Australian National University in 2003 and 2004, at the University of Florida in 1998, Deakin University, Geelong, Australia in 1998, and at the Institute of International Business Studies, Pordenone, Italy during 1993-1994. Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, he pursued an education at the University of Gorakhpur in India, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in physics in 1961 and 1963, respectively. Dr. Srivastava continued his academic pursuits at Oregon State University, from which he graduated with a Master of Science in physics in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1972.
Ultimately, Dr. Srivastava obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in accounting from the University of Oklahoma in 1982. He found success with his written works as well, publishing articles in such publications as the Accounting Review, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Decision Support Systems, the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, the Journal of Accounting Research, the Journal of Management Information Systems and the Journal of Physics, Physical Review, among numerous others. Dr. Srivastava pioneered the applications of Dempster-Shafer Theory of Belief Functions to audit decisions. A leader in his field, Dr. Srivastava was elected to serve on the board of the Belief Function Application Society from 2010 to 2014.
