A respected and hard-working figure in his field since 1989, Dr. Bellaloui currently works as the research plant physiologist for the Crop Genetics Research Unit of the USDA-ARS in Stoneville, MS. He began his career as an assistant professor in the department of biology, previously Institute of Biological Sciences, for Constantine 1 University in Algeria, and in the Department of Biology at the University of Oum El Bouaghi (OEB) in Algeria, a position he held for three and a half years. He followed this professional opportunity with a visiting scholar position at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany, from 1993 to 1995. Then, a visiting scholar position at the university of California Davis in 1995, before acting as a lecturer at CSU, Chico, from 2000 to 2004.
Having earned a Diploma of Higher Studies in plant biology from the Institute of Biological Sciences at Constantine 1 University in 1984, Dr. Bellaloui later received a PhD in plant physiology and nutrition from the Faculty of Biological Sciences, previously Department of Pure and Applied Biology, at the University of Leeds in England, in 1989. Beyond his endeavors in academia, he has remained affiliated with many organizations among his professional circles. In addition to his current involvement with the Crop Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, and Soil Science Society of America, for which he served on the International Service in Agronomy Award Committee, Fellows Committee, International Soil Science Award Committee, Seed Science Award Committee, Crop Science Research Award Committee, Dr. Bellaloui maintains membership with the Crop Science Society of America, the Soil Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America.
Throughout his prolific career, Dr. Bellaloui served on various committees and boards in relation to his areas of expertise. He served as chair for the division of Agriculture and Plant Science for Mississippi Academy of Sciences. He is currently a board member and the chairman of the Advances in Agricultural Research Committee for the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, as well as an advisor/consultant in the area of seed/grain nutrition to undergraduate and graduate students at the Mississippi State University; faculty and undergraduate and graduate students at Mississippi Valley State University. Beginning 2011, Dr. Bellaloui has served for several years on the Scientific Committee for the National Center of Biotechnology in Constantine, Algeria, and he has served as both advisor and consultant on faculty and student research projects on grain physiology and nutrition for Mississippi Valley State University since 2008. He also served on the Safety Committee for the USDA-ARS in Stoneville, MS, where he served, as needed, as Acting Research Leader for the Crop Genetics Research Unit, and acting, as needed, as location coordinator for USDA-ARS location in Stoneville, MS, from 2013 to 2016.
Previous to these appointments, Dr. Bellaloui took on the role of project evaluator for international research projects such as the Romanian National Council for Research and Development. Furthermore, Dr. Bellaloui, and in addition to his lecturer position at CSU, Chico, from 2002 to 2004, he acted as supervisor for senior students' projects, a member of the Evaluation of Exemplary Online Courses Committee. As an invited speaker, Dr. Bellaloui gave talks at the Mississippi Academy of Sciences annual meeting in 2017; the Breeder's Tour, Stoneville, MS, in 2015; the Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board meeting with researchers in 2011, Stoneville, MS; gave a series of lectures on genetics and nutrition of seed protein and oil at the Mississippi Valley State University from 2008 to 2013; the Memphis VA Medical Center in 2011. As an international figure, Dr. Bellaloui gave international talks in several countries, including China, Germany, Egypt, UK, and recently in Rome, Italy, where he gave an invited talk about "Soybean Seed Quality and Nutrition: Environment and Genetics" at the 3rd International Conference of Agricultural & Food Chemistry, July 22-23, 2018 in Rome, Italy. In addition to his professional service, Dr. Bellaloui has made a substantial contribution to science and technology in the area of plant nutrition and seed composition, including protein, oil, fatty acids, sugars, isoflavones, and minerals. He published several book-chapters and numerous peer-reviewed articles in highly respected peer-reviewed journals such as Plant Physiology, Crop Science, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry; Frontiers in Plant Science; Plos One; and others. Since 2006, Dr. Bellaloui served as a guest editor for Frontiers in Plant Science; Plants; and served as a reviewers for several journals, including Crop Science; Agronomy Journal; Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology; Journal of Crop Improvement; Plant and Soil, Euphytica, and Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry; Australian Journal of Plant Physiology, Plant Biology, and the Journal of Plant Nutrition. He served on the editorial boards for the Atlas Journal of Biology, the Atlas Journal of Plant Genome Sciences, Frontiers in Plant Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and International Scholarly Research Notices.
Beyond his myriad professional accomplishments, Dr. Bellaloui has received several accolades in recognition of his service. He received a grant from Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board in 2018-2019, contributed to a Fertilizer Research and Education Program grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture from 2001 to 2003, and a visiting research fellowship from Universität Hohenheim from 1993 to 1995. Furthermore, he earned the Grant Award for Exemplary Online Courses from CSU, Chico, in 2004. With his research teams, Dr. Bellaloui was able, using transgenic tobacco and transgenic rice, to prove for first time that boron (B) nutrient is mobile in species containing sugar alcohols; was able, with his research teams, to discover new Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) associated with seed protein, oil, fatty acids, sugars, isoflavones, and micro- and macro-nutrients on different soybean chromosomes.
