Ms. Thomas was affiliated with the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, D.C., the world's largest museum library system, for more than four successful decades. Named as the deputy director emeritus in 2019, her tenure began in 1976, where she rose from the position of the manager of planning and administration to an assistant and associate director. Ultimately, Ms. Thomas was promoted to become the deputy director, a position in which she excelled for another 10 years before retiring. As a library administrator, she became well known for her dedication, tireless work ethic and expertise.
Supported by several industry-related organizations in support of her career, Ms. Thomas has been a member of the American Library Association's committee organization since 1983, serving two terms as councilor. She previously maintained involvement in the same capacity between 1999 and 2003. Ms. Thomas is also a past president and 2001 Distinguished Service Award recipient of the D.C. Library Association, as well as a member of the Federal Libraries and Information Centers, the Library Administration and Management Association and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, where she is active in numerous roles.
In preparation for her career, Ms. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, at Mount Holyoke College in 1973. Following this accomplishment, she received a Master of Science in library science at the Catholic University of America in 1978. Ms. Thomas completed her medieval studies coursework at University of York in England between 1973 and 1974.
As a part of her professional commitments to the field, Ms. Thomas has contributed to various magazines, and served as an editor of "Information Imagineering" in 1988.
Likewise, she authored "An Odyssey in Print: Adventures in the Smithsonian Libraries" through Smithsonian Press in 2002. Recognized for her achievements, Ms. Thomas was recognized with a Secretary's Award for Excellence in Equal Employment Opportunity by the Smithsonian Institute in 2000. Shortly thereafter, she received a Distinguished Service Award from the District of Columbia Library Association in 2001, the Raymond Von Dran Memorial Award from the Catholic University of America in 2017 and the Ainsworth Rand Spofford President's Award from the District of Columbia Library Association in 2020.
