Retired since 2016, he concluded his career as a professor for the Kennedy School of Government, a division of Harvard University. Previously, he served the university since 1998, holding other prominent roles including Malcolm Wiener Professor of Social Policy. In this role, Dr. Jencks taught coursework in the disciplines of health, criminal justice, housing, education and inequality. Regarded in his industry for his breadth of knowledge, he has found success in other professional endeavors, including positions as visiting professor for the University of Chicago, John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and Urban Affairs for Northwestern University, fellow of the Institute of Policy Studies and associate editor of New Republic Magazine.
When asked of his professional journey, Dr. Jencks candidly admits that when he graduated with his undergraduate degree, he had no idea what he wanted to do. With an interest in writing, he followed the journalism path for a short time as he had previously served as an editor for the Harvard Crimson during his studies. After working at New Republic Magazine, he was drawn to a research program happening at Harvard University, which diverted his career toward education and research. Looking back, Dr. Jencks feels that the opportunities he took to find his true career path had provided him a strong foundation from which his successes have grown. His achievements have also come from his own education, which includes a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education from Harvard University. Dr. Jencks also holds a Doctor of Letters from Columbia College and a Doctor of Laws from Kalamazoo College.
Considered a leader in his field, Dr. Jencks has achieved distinction as a fellow for prominent organizations, including the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Russell Sage Foundation and the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences. He has remained on top of his field through his memberships and affiliations with the American Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Sciences.
