As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Driven to pursue a career in medicine while coming of age, Ms. Dirkes earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1976. Upon graduating, she gained valuable expertise in the field and began working as a Surgical Intensive Care nurse and then clinical educator with University of Michigan Health Systems, where she cared for critically ill patients, and mentored new nurses, including students and new staff for many years. While working for the University of Michigan, Ms. Dirkes earned a Master of Science in Administration from Madonna University in 1991.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Dirkes worked as the clinical education manager of continuous renal replacement therapies for Baxter Healthcare. For two years, she maintained responsibility for all education on continuous renal replacement therapies, including sales, technical support, and clinical educators in Baxter's renal division. Additionally, she oversaw the production of all support education materials for Baxter equipment. In early 2000, Ms. Dirkes also served as a Clinical Educator and then a critical care relationship manager with NxStage Medical, where she continues working to teach ICU nurses about continuous dialysis therapies and the use of the NxStage System One.
Drawing on her considerable expertise, Ms. Dirkes excels today as a Clinical Educator with Fresenius Medical North America, who purchased NxStage, where she trains nursing staff on the operation of the NxStage dialysis machine. Due to her vast breadth of knowledge she gained working at the University of Michigan Health System, she authored a chapter in an Australian critical care textbook on the kidney and contributed to numerous publications on continuous renal therapies and kidney injury such as "Continuous renal replacement therapies: Dialysis for critically ill patients," "Prone positioning: Is it safe and effective?" and "Acute Respiratory Failure and ECMO."
Ms. Dirkes remains aware of changes in the field through her alignment with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Society for Critical Care Medicine. In light of her outstanding achievements, she has been asked to lecture all over the world and been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Though her career has been suffused with highlights, Ms. Dirkes is especially proud to have become known as one of the best critical care dialysis nurses around the world.
