Celebrating more than three decades of excellence in his field, Dr. Silverman found success as a private practice clinical psychologist in Kensington, Maryland, between 1988 and his retirement in 1997. His long and successful tenure has included numerous appointments in both the public and private sector. He notably worked for the Youth Services Administration in Washington between 1968 and 1988 as the chief psychologist and chief of office program services, where he was involved with serving juvenile delinquents and had the opportunity to chair a group of prominent individuals to create positive reform. Dr. Silverman previously gained experience as a clinical psychologist and director of psychology training with the Bureau of Mental Health in Washington between 1964 and 1968.
As an extension of his career, Dr. Silverman was active on the board of appeals for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Washington, D.C. He was also a visiting associate psychologist for Taylor Manor Hospital in Ellicott City, Maryland, a consultant for Cooksville Academy for Boys in Cooksville, Maryland, and an independent examiner for Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, D.C. Well regarded for his scholarly output, Dr. Silverman has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and has produced public service announcements and short documentaries on local television in his area of expertise.
During his incredible journey, Dr. Silverman also led several civic initiatives. Among them, he chaired the Montgomery County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union in Maryland, and was active on the board of directors of Montgomery Community Media, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing access to public media. Likewise, Dr. Silverman is a former board director of the National Capital Area Cello Club.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Dr. Silverman's decision to study mental health stemmed from several of his family members, who also worked in the field. After graduating from high school, he pursued an education at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he attained a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. Dr. Silverman was subsequently accepted to the University of Maryland, from which he earned both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1962 and 1964, respectively.
Dr. Silverman was elected as a fellow of the Maryland Psychological Association. He is also a member of the American Psychological Association and the D.C. Psychological Association, and is a past president of the Montgomery County Prince Counties Association of Practicing Psychologists. During the course of his career, Dr. Silverman received several Monty Community Theatre Awards for his work in the arts.
Dr. Silverman has been married to Judy Shapiro Silverman since June 1961. The Silvermans have two sons, Michael and Noah, and four grandchildren.
