Prior to this appointment, she worked as a charge and staff nurse with the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System in Little Rock from 2001 to 2004. Ms. Porter had formerly flourished as the director of nursing for the Homemaker Sojourners Home Care Agency, a staff nurse for prison health at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California, the director of nursing at the City College of San Francisco and a critical care nurse at the University of California San Francisco.
Between 1987 and 2010, Ms. Porter served in the U.S. Army, having been commissioned as an officer before advancing to the rank of a major. During this time, she was additionally active as the director of nursing for the U.S. Army Reserve's licensed practical nursing program at the Presidio of San Francisco, the head nurse for medical and surgical nursing at the Madigan Army Medical Center, a member of the post-anesthesia care unit for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and professional management command for critical care assignments with the U.S. Army Medical Department in Fort Campbell in Kentucky. Previously, Ms. Porter began her career as a nursing assistant at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center in 1972.
Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Porter sought an education at the University of California Berkeley, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts in art history. She continued her academic pursuits with a Bachelor of Science in nursing at the University of California San Francisco and a Master of Education at Holy Names University. She concluded her studies at the University of Phoenix, completing coursework toward a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing. In addition to these accomplishments, Ms. Porter has been certified in advanced trauma and life support, acupuncture, legal nurse consulting, community college education and home healthcare instruction, to name only a few.
Ms. Porter has participated in numerous endeavors beyond her primary responsibilities in her professional circles. She has found success with her civic efforts over the years, including as a hurricane relief volunteer with Providing Nursing Care in Waco, Texas, following Katrina, as a volunteer nurse with the American Red Cross, and as a volunteer service provider at the Black Man's Free Clinic in San Francisco, California. Ms. Porter has been affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise, including with the American Nurses Association, the California Nurses Association, the Military Officers Association, the International Nurses Association, the Reserves Officers Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
As a testament to her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Porter has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She has been recognized by the U.S. Army Reserve with an Armed Forces Reserve Medal, a Commendation Medal, a Component Achievement Medal and an Army Reserve Ribbon. Likewise, she was presented with a Customer Services Award and a Special Contribution Award from the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, as well as an Award from the American Legion and a National Defense Service Medal. Notably, Ms. Porter was selected for inclusion in the Medical Order of the Mojave.
Noted as a determined professional who has gone above and beyond to provide for her children, Ms. Porter is proud to have developed efforts for graduate students in nurse assisting, vocational nursing and paraprofessional healthcare programs to receive college credits. Having harbored a lifelong interest in the field of healthcare, she has been continually motivated by the gratification that she has received from her work. Looking toward the future, Ms. Porter hopes to travel and help those in need however she possibly can in her well-deserved retirement.
