Mr. Cortez's distinguished career began as a senior stock market analyst at Merrill Lynch in New York City in 1971. Over the years, he excelled as the president of Liberty Capital Management between 1978 and 1984 and was the president for Cortez Capital Management between 1984 and 1989. Mr. Cortez was Senior Vice President at Prudential Financial, Vice President at Goldman Sachs, and president of Torrey Associates LLC between 1984 and 2009. Mr. Cortez served as a member of the board of advisors for the Investment Management Consultant Association from 1998 to 2009.
Mr. Cortez further flourished as a guest lecturer on investment policy and hedge funds at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as well as a lecturer at the University of California Berkeley, the New York Institute of Finance and at his alma mater Queens College, a part of the City University of New York. In his commitment to education, Mr. Cortez is past chairman of the business advisory board for Queens College. Mr. Cortez has also been an adjunct faculty member at Harvard University since 2004.
As an expert in his field, Mr. Cortez co-authored "Industry and Stock Forecast" in 1976 and contributed to the book "The Cosma Hypothesis: Implications of the Overview Effect," written by noted author Frank White in 2019. He has authored numerous articles on the topic of hedge funds published in professional publications as well. Additionally, Mr. Cortez has been a mentor at the Money Management Institute for younger business executives and a mentor for Army Veterans through the ACP-USA program.
Mr. Cortez earned an undergraduate degree at Queens College in 1971. He did postgraduate work in the mathematical logic Ph.D. program at Columbia University from 1971 to 1973. Mr. Cortez was designated as a certified investment management analyst in 1993.
In 1981, Mr. Cortez was recognized as the Speaker of the Year by the Municipal Treasurers Association of California. He later accepted the Stephen L. Kessler Writing Award from the Investment and Wealth Institute in 2005. In 2020, he was celebrated with the President's Medal from Queens College, the college's highest administrative honor.
