Zev Garber Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Mr. Garber celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Mr. Garber, professor emeritus and chairperson of Jewish studies at Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys, California, retired in 2009 after more than three and a half decades of excellence as a faculty member. Leaving a considerable impact during his tenure, he was most notably responsible for establishing the first Jewish Study program both on campus and in the state California, as well as the first Jewish studies major. Within just one year of developing the program, the university had a total of 18 Jewish studies courses, which was not only unusual, but highly successful. As an extension of his career in academia, Mr. Garber had the opportunity to serve as a visiting professor of religious studies at the University of California and as a visiting Rosenthal professor at Case Western Reserve University.

A prolific author in his area of expertise, in addition to contributing multiple scholarly articles and reviews in various professional journals, Mr. Garber has authored 15 books, including "The Annotated Passover Haggadah" in 2021, "Judaism and Jesus" in 2020, "Mel Gibson's Passion: The Film, the Controversy, and Its Implications" in 2006, "Academic Approaches to Teaching Jewish Studies" in 2000, "Shoah: The Paradigmatic Genocide" in 1994, "Methodology in the Academic Teaching of Judaism" in 1986 and "Maven in Blue Jeans: A Festschrift in Honor of Zev Garber" in 2009. He is presently the editor-in-chief emeritus of the Studies in Shoah series, emeritus editor of Shofar, emeritus editorial advisor of Shofar Supplements in Jewish studies and emeritus editorial advisor for Western States Jewish History. Likewise, Mr. Garber is also the editor of Iggeret, which is the official newsletter of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew (NAPH).

Though Mr. Garber is no longer teaching full time in the classroom, he remains active in the field. Apart from his writings and editorial posts, he is co-hosting the annual Judaic Studies Lecture Series, "Judaism and Jesus: A Fresh Perspective on Messianic Judaism" at the University of Central Florida. The event was hosted alongside a current faculty member of at the University of Central Florida on March 11, 2021.

Born and raised in New York, Mr. Garber had the opportunity to visit Israel while attending high school, where he was first exposed to the Hebrew language. After graduating, he studied locally at Hunter College, City University of New York, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. Continuing his studies, Mr. Garber studied to the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Southern California, where he completed a Master of Arts in Religious Studies, and a PhD.

Supporting his career in Jewish studies, Mr. Garber is a past president of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew (NAPH). He notably received a Recognition Award from the organization in 1990. Other memberships to his credit include the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Association for Jewish Studies, and the American Oriental Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Garber has been cited in the fourth edition of Who's Who in Religion and the 23rd and 24th editions of Who's Who in the West.
