Dr. Halloran is a mathematician and professor who has been teaching at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain since 1991. Presently, he teaches four courses on campus, including Mathematics for Liberal Arts, Structure of Math III: Number Patterns, Structure of Math IV: Development of Geometric Ideas, and Techniques in Diagnosis and Remediation for the Teaching of Math K-12. During Dr. Halloran's tenure, he also chaired the mathematics department for three years. He previously taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut for five years. Well regarded in his field, he was a finalist for the 2007 to 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award from Central Connecticut State University. His curriculum was also recognized in 1996 as the Best Mathematical Program Education Series in the Country.
Before his professional journey through academia, Dr. Halloran garnered a laudable reputation for teaching mathematics and science for the Springfield Massachusetts Public Schools for nearly three decades. He was also fortunate to serve for 21 years as the director of mathematics education and was responsible for successfully developing curriculum and instructional strategies within the district for kindergarten-aged students through to grade eight. Supplementing his full-time role, Dr. Halloran was afforded the opportunity to join the author team for Merrill Mathematics K-8 Textbook Series for Merrill Publishing Company in 1982. He was just one of just six individuals to author the successful series, which was in print for nearly a decade between 1982 and 1991 and was recognized as being the second best-selling mathematics book series during 1989 and 1990.
Dr. Halloran's accomplishments in education have also included various other positions. He has consulted on behalf of several area school districts and charter schools, conducted numerous workshops and was an influential member of multiple professional committees. He also published several papers and reviews and made dozens of presentations before such prominent organizations as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Likewise dedicated to the educational community, Dr. Halloran is a member of the Barr Smith Scholarship Committee, which bestows up to $20 million annually to support students.
Dr. Halloran received a Bachelor of Science in physics at Worcester State College in 1963. Furthering his studies, he completed a Master of Liberal Arts in mathematics at Wesleyan University in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education at the University of Connecticut in 1976. Supported by several industry-related organizations, Dr. Halloran is a member of the Associated Teachers of Mathematics in Connecticut, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He was a recipient of a 4-year grant from the National Science Foundation and the Curriculum Associations.
