Born in New Jersey, Dr. Legato received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Manhattanville College in 1956. She earned the degree of Doctor of Medicine from New York University in 1962. Dr. Legato went on to complete an internship and first year residency in internal medicine on the First Medical (Columbia) Division of Bellevue Hospital and a second-year residency in internal medicine at the Presbyterian Hospital of the City of New York, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Legato then continued a distinguished career in medicine as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was appointed an Assistant Attending Physician at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York in 1969, one year after she became an Instructor in Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Over the next several decades, she advanced in her medical and educational roles, becoming a respected cardiologist internationally renowned for her expertise in gender-specific medicine. Dr. Legato's impressive career as a physician included an appointment as a Senior Visiting Attending at The Roosevelt Hospital and New York Presbyterian Hospital. She currently holds the title of Emerita Physician of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University, which she received in 1998. She was awarded an honorary PhD from the University of Panama in 2015 in recognition of her contributions to human health. She continues in private practice, research and teaching in New York City.
The pinnacle of Dr. Legato's career, however, came after discovering the differences in the experience of coronary artery disease between men and women. She extended her work in cardiology to research that encompassed studies of the impact of biological sex on normal human physiology and the experience of disease, founding the new discipline of gender-specific medicine. With the assistance of her Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Columbia, and supported by a grant of several million dollars from Procter& Gamble, she founded The Partnership for Women's Health, which focused on gender-specific medical research and educational programs that would serve both health care professionals and the public. Several years later, in 2008, she established the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine, a nonprofit organization that continues and expands the work of the Partnership for Women's Health.
She has taught clinical medicine to hundreds of Columbia University medical students over the course of her career. At Roosevelt Hospital, she served as the course director for continuing medical education and as director of postgraduate medical as well as chairing the medical board's quality assurance committee. Furthermore, she was active in Columbia's department of medicine's executive committee and ad hoc committee on appointments and promotions. Apart from her full-time responsibilities, Dr. Legato served for four years as a scientific advisor charter member of the Office of Research on Women's Health, which was founded by the National Institutes of Health to expand our understanding of women's physiology and their gender-specific experience of disease.
A respected author for both the scientific and lay communities, Dr. Legato authored the bestselling books, "Why Men Die First: How to Lengthen Your Lifespan" and "Eve's Rib: The New Science of Gender-Specific Medicine and How It Can Save Your Life," as well as "The Female Heart: The Truth about Women and Coronary Artery Disease and Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget," which was translated into more than 10 different languages. She has also edited the fundamental textbook in gender-specific medicine, "Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine," now in its fourth edition. The third edition won the PROSE Award from the Association of American Publishers in 2018 as the best book published that year in clinical medicine. She also just released a new scientific work, "The Plasticity of Sex," which also won a PROSE Award in 2021 as the best book published in biomedicine. In addition to her books, Dr. Legato founded and served as an editor of two prominent professional publications; The Journal of Gender-Specific Medicine and Gender-Medicine.
Dr. Legato is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians. Among her countless awards and recognitions, she received the DifferenceMaker100 Award by TIAA-CREF in 2018, an Honorary Award for Excellence in Science at the International Congress of Cardiology in 2016 and the Heroes in Women's Health Award from CVS Caremark in 2008. She also received the Shirley Sacks Women's Health Award for Distinguished Service in Gender-Specific Medicine by the National Council on Women's Health Inc. in 2005 as well as her Honorary Doctorate from the University of Panama in 2015. Dr. Legato has consistently been listed for two decades in multiple medical registries, including the National Sex and Gender Based Physician Registry, America's Best Physicians and America's Top Doctors.
