Through her own recovery, Ms. Hughes met three women who changed her life; they worked with her, held her accountable and loved her until she could love herself. She resolved to leverage her experiences toward helping others, culminating in her work as a peer specialist with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she collaborates with various community and treatment providers, supports victims of violence and trafficking, and offers recovery coaching services. In addition to her work at Beth Israel, Ms. Hughes serves as a recovery coach for PAARI and the Boston Public Health Commission, where she facilitates pathways to substance abuse treatment and safe housing for those in need.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Hughes has gained valuable expertise in the field as a per diem counselor with the Boston Public Health Commission, a senior case manager with Volunteers of America, where she juggled 10-plus cases at once, and as a recovery specialist with the Dimock Foundation. With the latter organization, she ensured the safety of more than 20 women. Though her career has been suffused with highlights, Ms. Hughes is especially proud to have helped women and marginalized populations empower themselves and rise out of adversity.
Over the years, Ms. Hughes studied human services, substance abuse and addiction counseling at Bunker Hill Community College and the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Recently, she also became a certified addiction recovery coach and a nationally certified peer recovery support specialist. Outside of her vocational circles, she continues to contribute as a volunteer with NECAT (New England Coalition Against Trafficking). Looking toward the future, Ms. Hughes intends to run a program, alongside her daughter, for young women and men to help end commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking.
