Allen Brings, DMA Gets the Star Treatment!

Dr. Brings, a seasoned pianist and lover of music, began his passion when he was a little boy. In those days, entertainment was only to be had on the radio. His father, an immigrant, had obtained 78 RPM recordings of performances of Schubert, Handel and Bach, which stuck with him for many years. He attended a performance of one of Marian Anderson's students, and "what I really wanted to do was go over there and thank her for beginning my love of music through her recordings." In addition to his passion for classical piano, Dr. Brings also fondly remembers listening to the Marine Corps Hymn, to the point where he was able to pick out the tune on a piano. Intrigued, his parents found a Hungarian immigrant, who was a skilled musician, and hired her to give him piano lessons. The next four years would be formative for Dr. Brings, to say the least. "I not only learned how to play the piano, but how to listen to music," he said.

Listening to music, Dr. Brings explained, is not simply a mental exercise. Rather, it is a full body experience, using his heart and mind to interpret the melodies' full richness and meaning. "I never thought of [music as] a career," Dr. Brings said, he just did what he loved. In addition to his work as a musician and an educator, Dr. Brings is an accomplished composer, with many works to his name.

After he was drafted into the Army, Dr. Brings was a Morse code radio operator, which interested Star due to the relationship between music and language, so it was perhaps natural that he took to it so quickly. "It sounds like you took all of your personal and interpersonal experiences, and turned that into your career," Star said. Dr. Brings is thankful for his parents' serious attitude toward music, though his deep joy for it also helped propel him down the path he would ultimately take.

Rather than rest on accolades, Dr. Brings prefers to take a more anonymous role in his creations. For example, when his compositions are being performed, he will often be asked to stand up and take a bow, but he would rather not do that, as the focus should be on the music, not on its creator.

Asked about advice he would pass on to other musicians, Dr. Brings' words were simple: "Do something you respect." Throughout a career turning passion into progress and music into magic, we have no doubt that Dr. Brings is worthy of the Star Treatment.
