Dr. Prasad is a renowned expert in bioengineering and a Cecil and Ida Green professor in systems biology at the University of Texas in Dallas. She started as an Assistant Professor in 2005 at Portland State University. She also currently serves as the director of the biomedical microdevices and nanotechnology laboratory, where she has supported approximately 70 graduate and 120 undergraduate researchers, and over 27 high school and middle school students. Focusing her research in the areas of bioengineering, material science and nanotechnology, Dr. Prasad specifically studies the various public health challenges of diagnostics relevant in the diagnosis of cancer, cardiovascular, and other diseases. Long attracted to the prospect of multidisciplinary research, her career represents the intersection of biology, medical science, engineering and chemistry.
Celebrating nearly 20 years in the field, Dr. Prasad began her career as a graduate student when she came to the USA where she was hired to work as a research assistant at the University of California at Riverside from 2001 to 2004, followed by additional teaching appointments at Portland State University, Arizona State University, and Wichita State University. Apart from her scholarly work, Dr. Prasad co-founded EnLiSense LLC, a start-up business, with her husband.
Considering it a profound blessing to be able to teach, Dr. Prasad values her position because she is responsible for shaping young lives, while also teaching them how to think independently and across multiple fields. She also greatly appreciates the opportunities she has in research, which she notes should not be left at the laboratory but should instead be translated directly to the market. As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Prasad holds patents for cellular biosensors, protein biosensors and their applications. She currently has several patents pending for optical biochemical sensors and micro cavity based biochemical sensors. A prolific scholar, she has disseminated much of her research by contributing over 200 articles to various professional journals and has presented poster papers at numerous conferences. She is currently pioneering the development of the wearable sweat sensor technologies through the creation of the WATCH technology platform in 2016.
To better support her community, Dr. Prasad was an advisor on behalf of Oregon Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement in Portland during 2005. An academic preparation program, it is designed for high school students and offers courses in various states throughout the country. Moreover, she has been a fellow of the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening since 2017. Dr. Prasad is also a respected member of several national and international organizations, including the International Society of Optical Engineering, the Association of Lab Automation and the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Prasad graduated from the University of Madras in her home country of India, receiving a Bachelor of Science in electronics and communications engineering in 2000. She later earned a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering at the University of California at Riverside in 2004. Dr. Prasad received the Graduate Student Research Award from the University of California in 2004 for her multidisciplinary research work on the development, application and characterization of a single cell based sensor. Shortly thereafter, she secured federal research grants to support her laboratory at Portland State University from 2005 to 2008 and since then has been the recipient of several awards during her career for her work in nano-biotechnology.
