Having led an impressive career as an educator for nearly four decades, Dr. Boston has since retired. Initially teaching various electrical engineering courses at the University of Maryland in College Park and biomedical engineering courses at Carnegie-Mellon, he was subsequently recruited by the University in Pittsburgh in 1980, where he remained for another 30 years. Teaching courses in anesthesiology, electrical engineering and communication sciences and disorders, he also served as an undergraduate program coordinator from 1995 to 2007. In this capacity, Dr. Boston was involved in an abundance of administrative work. His department was divided into two sections, one in computer engineering and one in traditional electrical engineering, and he oversaw the latter.
Dr. Boston conducted extensive research in signal processing applications in biomedicine during his tenure in academia, and has disseminated much of his findings in over 60 peer reviewed journals and 60 additional meetings proceedings. He also contributed a number of chapters to books by other authors. Dr. Boston's research was notably funded through research grants by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Naval Research and the Deafness Research Foundation.
An alumnus of Stanford University, Dr. Boston received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1964 and 1966, respectively. He later attended Northwestern University, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in electrical engineering in 1971 and the University of Pittsburgh, from which he obtained a Master of Business Administration in 1992. Dr. Boston has been affiliated with several prominent professional organizations with respect to his field, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American EEG Society, the Society for Neuroscience and Sigma Xi.
