Joining the team in 1981 as an associate staff member, he also gained recognition as an assistant and associate attending surgeon at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. Dr. Belgorod has been on the attending staff of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital since 1981. Most notably, Dr. Belgorod has maintained a successful ophthalmology practice as the owner of Barry Miles Belgorod, MD, PC in New York City for over 40 years. Established in 1981, he focuses his practice on offering premier eye care services ranging from comprehensive ophthalmic examinations to cataract laser and micro-surgery, photorefractive keratectomy surgery to correct patients' vision, of which he was a pioneer and patentee, and medical, laser and surgical treatments for glaucoma.
Academically, Dr. Belgorod has taught as a clinical instructor on the faculty of ophthalmology at the Weill Medical College at Cornell University since 1981 and as a research associate in the department of chemistry at his alma mater, Queens College, since 1997. As a part of his civic commitments, Dr. Belgorod has served on the Parents' Advisory Board at Georgia Institute of Technology. Located in Atlanta, Georgia Tech is a public research university and institute of technology.
Throughout the course of his professional career, Dr. Belgorod has served on countless committees as both a medical professional and educator, has been active on a multitude of scientific and advisory boards, and has consulted on behalf of many organizations, including the New York Times, Amtrak, NBC and General Electric. As a respected researcher, he has been instrumental as an Investigator and Principal Investigator for clinical trials and other medical innovations since 1980. He has also had the opportunity to serve as an invited lecturer before multiple professional organizations, hospitals and institutions in his area of expertise, speaking on such topics as the evolution of cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation, the human crystalline lens and emergency response for eye injuries, as a Responder at the World Trade Center tragedy. Furthermore, Dr. Belgorod has contributed numerous articles to various professional publications and scholarly journals. He, notably, holds approximately a dozen U.S., Japanese and European patents in his field, covering electronic LCD photochromic lenses, excimer (far UV) laser delivery systems for laser vision correction and non-opioid analgesics and anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals.
In support of his professional career, Dr. Belgorod has been actively engaged with a host of industry-related organizations. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the New York State Ophthalmological Society. Furthermore, Dr. Belgorod is active with the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, the New York City Medical Reserve Corps and the New York City Radiological Reserve Corps.
Dr. Belgorod attained a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, at Queens College in 1973. He subsequently completed a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in the Perelman School of Medicine in 1977 as a Jonas Salk Scholar. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship in internal medicine at the Pennsylvania Hospital, and a residency in ophthalmology at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, as well as the completion of more than 50 additional courses and trainings over the past 40 years. Eminently qualified in his field, Dr. Belgorod is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a sought-after expert in ophthalmic litigation.
Recognized in 1973 with the Ira M. Goldin Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry, Dr. Belgorod also received the prestigious Charles A. Oliver Memorial Prize for the highest academic standing in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He has been featured in New York Magazine as a Best Doctor in Ophthalmology and in Castle Connolly's Best Doctors in Ophthalmology for many consecutive years.
