After more than 36 years of professional excellence in education, Ms. Hayes retired from teaching with the Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools in Indiana in 1999. Hired by the aforementioned school district as a social studies educator shortly after her graduation, she focused her teaching on world history and anthropology during her tenure. Moreover, Ms. Hayes served as the chairman of her department between 1990 and 1999.
Beyond her primary responsibilities, Ms. Hayes often participated with the Indiana University's (IU) archaeology program as a volunteer and frequently visited the archaeological field schools. Additionally, she completed a workshop program at IU, which taught teachers more about archaeology. In addition to her success in the classroom, Ms. Hayes has been affiliated with several organizations related to her discipline, including the National Education Association and the Indiana State Teachers Association.
A leader behind numerous community and educational initiatives, Ms. Hayes was active with the North Dubois Girl Scouts as a treasurer and troop leader, the Jasper Business and Professional Women's Club as the president and Psi Iota Xi Sorority as president. In 1976, she was elected as an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention from the Indiana Eighth Congressional District. For twenty years she was a delegate to the Indiana Republican State Convention from Dubois County.
Born and raised in Indiana, Ms. Hayes studied locally, earning an undergraduate degree at the University of Evansville in 1963. Five years later, she obtained a Master of Library Science at Indiana University in 1968 while teaching on a full-time basis. Since 1997 she has served as president of the Dubois County Historical Society and was a founding member of the Dubois County Museum where she is a member of the board and collections chairperson.
Presented with the Jasper Business and Professional Women's Club Woman of the Year Award in 1979, Ms. Hayes was subsequently recognized for her volunteer service with an Appreciation Award from the Raintree Girl Scout Council in Evansville in 1996. For her tireless work ethic, she accepted Jasper High School's Positive Educator Award in 1998 and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association's Area 7 Exemplary Volunteer Award in 2005. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Hayes has been featured in the 54th and 55th editions of Who's Who in America, the sixth edition of Who's Who in American Education, and the 21st, 22nd and 24th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
