Driven to pursue a career in service to others, Ms. Anderson became a nurse, earning an Associate Degree in Applied Science/Nursing from The College of Lake County in 1997. In addition, during that time, June was initiated into The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Before Ms. Anderson became a nurse, she was also employed in other occupations of service. Working for the Marriott Corporation for 12 years, Ms. Anderson was hired initially as a waitress and then promoted to Dining Room Supervisor at The Marriott Lincolnshire Resort in Lincolnshire, Illinois. At this hotel; the only Marriott Hotel worldwide that houses a live legitimate theater, The Marriott's Lincolnshire Theater, where Ms. Anderson was recruited to work as a Group Sales Representative and Assistant Sound Board Operator. When asked how it was to work with famous entertainers featured at The Marriott Theater such as: Bill Bixby, Eve Arden, and Ricardo Montalban and many more, Ms. Anderson replied, "It was great and they got to meet me!" Ms. Anderson also humbly claimed this job as one of her most proud accomplishments. Ms. Anderson continued to be brought up in the company, working as a sales and marketing coordinator for Courtyard by Marriott Regional Sales Office.
While continuing to work for Marriott Hotels, Ms. Anderson co-purchased an older building in Waukegan, Illinois. She and her partners restored and revamped this building making it a popular place to eat and listen to music. It was named Dillinger's Tavern and Eatery. Ms. Anderson co-owned and co-operated this business for 6 years before deciding to go to nursing school.
Ms. Anderson finished nursing school and was hired at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois. Throughout her tenure as a registered nurse, Ms. Anderson maintained a wide range of responsibilities, serving as a staff nurse in Day Surgery, a Nurse Case Manager in Pain Management & Rehabilitation and then a nurse in the Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department. Ms. Anderson explained there are many skills to learn working as a nurse. Critical thinking, being organized, administering medications, knowing about the medications you are administering and performing physical exams, to name a few. Ms. Anderson explained that nurses do not just consider test results and that a nurse needs to be caring, empathetic, and a good listener to whomever the patient is or wherever they came from. Ms. Anderson has received many top scoring evaluations from supervisors and patients.
Though her career has been infused with many highlights, Ms. Anderson is proud to be a Traumatic Brain Injury survivor. She believes the highlights in her career and life were inspired by her parents' diligence, examples of good work ethics, words of encouragement and learning not to settle.
Now that she is retired, Ms. Anderson contributes to her community as a member of The Brain Injury Society of Illinois. Future goals for Ms. Anderson include pursuing a patent on some innovative ideas she has and maybe teaching others how to achieve their dreams.
