Dr. Sovers holds a Bachelor of Science in physics and chemistry from Brooklyn College and a Doctor of Philosophy in physics and physical chemistry from Princeton University. He also completed a fellowship in chemistry with the National Science Foundation at the University of Oxford, and undertook postdoctoral courses at Columbia University. Dr. Sovers began his career at the Argonne National Laboratory, whereupon he joined the technical staff of GTE Laboratories. He also served on the technical staff of the development division of the Sony Corporation in Tokyo, Japan for six years. He subsequently found success at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, for more than three and a half decades.
Dr. Sovers retired from his profession in 2015. Throughout the course of his career, he was most grateful for his time spent at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he learned that the continents moved in respect to one another. Dr. Sovers was also proud to become involved with the development of techniques that determined the precise location of radio stars in space.
As an accomplished professional, Dr. Sovers contributed to the proper navigation of a new generation of JPL Mars probes. He has also served on international committees to establish and evaluate celestial reference frames. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Sovers worked in three aspects of physics and chemistry, encompassing theoretical chemistry of molecular structures, lanthanide ion spectroscopy in solids and radio interferometric (VLBI) measurements to establish a coordinate reference frame for interplanetary spacecraft navigation.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Sovers has contributed articles on physics and chemistry to numerous professional journals. He also authored "d-Hybridization in Pi Bonds" for the Journal of Chemical Physics and co-authored a book detailing work which led to a new celestial reference framework. In order to remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Sovers maintains his professional affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, the American Geophysical Union and the International VLBI Service.
