Mr. Kagemoto is a photographer, printmaker and teacher celebrating more than four decades of involvement in the arts. He began studying photography in high school during the 1960s under his teacher, Robert Bow. After graduating from high school, Mr. Kagemoto worked in the commercial photography field, first at Technicolor Inc. as a Kodachrome film processor, then later at a custom photo shop printing large-scale murals used in museum exhibits and commercial displays.
In 1972, Mr. Kagemoto earned a certificate from the School of Modern Photography in New Jersey. He continued his education at the University of Hawaii, studying intaglio printmaking with Edward Stasack and lithography with Ron Kraver. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1977. Mr. Kagemoto moved to New York to continue his education in photography with John Seaholm and intaglio etching with Benjamin Wigfall. He taught community art workshops at the Communications Village in Kingston, New York. His early influences included the colorful posters of Peter Max, the graphic photo-etchings of John Morita, the viscosity intaglio prints of Pat Jow and the insightful photographs of Drew Carolan. Mr. Kagemoto completed his education with a Master of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1979.
In the early 1980s, Mr. Kagemoto conducted printmaking workshops at the University of California Extension and served as a visiting lecturer in the Fine Arts department of San Francisco State University, where he taught printmaking and drawing classes. He started Wonderland Productions providing a variety of commercial photography and graphic art services. He is the director of several short documentaries, including "Visitations" and "Ancient Meso-America," and editor of a short film, "Hendrix Experience." In the late 1980s, Mr. Kagemoto returned to San Francisco State University as a project manager, transitioning to become Assistant Director of Procurement and Contracts by 2005. He continued his work for the university until his retirement in 2017. Presently, Mr. Kagemoto continues his independent photographic work, and is in the process of obtaining gallery representation. In addition to his visual arts practice, he plays and repairs guitars, and is the author of one collected volume of poetry, "Orion's Winter."
