Dr. Goodman, of Bowie Internal Medicine in Bowie, Maryland, has since retired his practice after four decades of service to his patients. As an internal medicine practitioner who earned renown for his expertise, he enjoyed diagnosing and treating adolescents and adults throughout his local community, and was equally gratified to work alongside two incredible physicians for more than 30 years, Drs. Norman Bohrer and Leonard Appel. Dr. Goodman notably spent eight years gaining experience at the Group Health Association, a pioneer health maintenance organization, between 1962 and 1970 before joining Drs. Bohrer and Appel in private practice.
In addition to his daily routine at the office, Dr. Goodman was a senior attending physician at Washington Hospital Center and Prince Georges General Hospital, beginning in 1970. He subsequently added practicing at the Doctors Hospital in 1980, where he remained active until his retirement. Other professional endeavors to Dr. Goodman's credit included a teaching appointment as a clinical instructor of internal medicine at George Washington University, consulting on behalf of the Maryland State Health Department, and providing his expertise on the Center for Addictions in Pregnancy advisory board.
One of Dr. Goodman's primary interests throughout the course of his career involved drugs and the influence it had on many of the patients he saw over the years. Becoming heavily involved in drug policy, he served as the chairperson of the Maryland Medical Society's committee on drugs. Furthermore, Dr. Goodman established a course for primary care physicians in drug abuse management and helped to develop a drug abuse prevention program for the public school system.
In 2014, Dr. Goodman became a published book author for the first time when he released "Millie: A Cautionary Tale of America's Longest War," a book that expounds upon the titular character's struggle against drug addiction. As a leader in his civic initiatives, he most notably served as a regimental surgeon with the U.S. military in Korea from 1956 to 1958. Dr. Goodman also joined the Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse organization in 1994 as a board director and became a founding member of the Maryland Citizens Health Initiative.
Dr. Goodman was born in Baltimore and grew up as the son of a prominent physician. After graduating from high school, he felt compelled to pursue a similar path and attended the prestigious Johns Hopkins University, where he received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Medicine on campus in 1950 and 1954, respectively. Dr. Goodman followed with an internship at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, a residency in internal medicine at Baltimore City Hospital (now Hopkins Bayview) and a residency in cardiology at Philadelphia General Hospital. He notably completed a rotating internship that also gave him exposure to surgery and gynecology. However, he ultimately decided on internal medicine, and shortly received board certification in the field.
Elected as a fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Goodman has also been prolifically active as a past president of the Prince Georges County Medical Society. Moreover, he has gained wonderful insight as a member of the American Medical Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Goodman has been cited in the 25th edition of Who's Who in the East.
