As an expert in his field, Dr. Glowinski began his career in the city of Paris as a research engineer for the Office de Radio et Télévision Française between 1963 and 1968 and for the Institut National de Recherches en Informatique et Automatique until 1970. Transitioning into academia, he later worked as a teacher and chairman of the mathematics department at the University of Paris VI before relocating to the U.S. to further his career. Supporting his academic and professional endeavors, Dr. Glowinski was recruited as a Sherman Fairchild distinguished visitor at California Institute of Technology, a docent professor at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, and an Honorary Professor at the Fudan University of Shanghai in China.
Dr. Glowinski further flourished as a scientific board member for French Electricity in Paris, the director for the European Center for Research and Advanced Training in Scientific Computing in Toulouse, France, a member of the scientific board of the French Petroleum Institute and a consultant for CNET in Paris. During his professional career, he also had the opportunity to chair the committee for the selection of invited speakers in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002. Dr. Glowinski was also appointed as a selection committee consultant for the Abel Prize and Shaw Prize.
Dr. Glowinski's incredible research efforts have resulted in the contribution of more than 450 scientific papers and 10 books, including "Splitting Methods in Communications, Imaging, Science, and Engineering" and "Variational Methods for the Numerical Solution of Nonlinear Elliptic Problems." He was honored to be selected for the 2009 Arne Magnus lectures at Colorado State University in Fort Collins in 2009. Dr. Glowinski has also worked as an invited speaker at multiple professional meetings in different parts of the world.
Born in Paris, Dr. Glowinski served his country as a lieutenant in the France Signal Corps in 1960 and 1961. He obtained a bachelor's degree at Ecole Polytechnique in 1960, a master's degree at École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in 1963 and a doctorate at the University of Paris in 1970. Furthermore, Dr. Glowinski is a registered professional engineer and a certified professor of mathematics.
Dr. Glowinski is noted as an elected fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Mathematical Society. He is likewise affiliated with the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics, from which he was honored with a Fluid Dynamics Award. Dr. Glowinski was also associated with several international organizations such as the Academia Europea in London, the French National Academy of Technology and the French National Academy of Sciences.
As a reflection of his accomplishments, Dr. Glowinski has received a multitude of awards, including a 2020 Reid Prize from the SIAM. He also obtained a 2011 CFD Award from the American Association of Computational Mechanics, a 2004 Von Karman Price from the SIAM and a 1996 Marcel Dassault Prize from the French National Academy of Sciences. Additionally, he was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate in 2004 from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland.
