Having fostered a fulfilling career as a general dentist, Dr. Powell has excelled as the president and dentist of Desoto Dental Services Inc. since 2014. Additionally, he inspires his students as an associate professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry. He previously held a position as the director of primary dental care at Roseman University of Health Sciences. In the years prior, while engaged in private practice, Dr. Powell worked as a columnist for political action with the Mississippi Dental Association Journal.
Dr. Powell initially earned an Associate of Arts in business administration from Jones County Junior College in 1970. He subsequently studied history at Millsaps College in 1970 and 1971. He later obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1990 and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in 1986. Dr. Powell concluded his education with a Master of Science in health care ethics from Creighton University in 2013.
Dr. Powell has maintained his involvement with the Mississippi Dental Association for the duration of his career. He has been additionally active as the president, the chairman of the Political Action Committee and a member of the Council on Communications. Furthermore, Dr. Powell has contributed to the American Association for Dental Research, the American Dental Association, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the American College of Dentists, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and International College of Dentists.
Dr. Powell is proud to have been a recipient of the Clinical Sciences Faculty Enrichment Award from the University of Tennessee in 2011 and the Alan J. Davis Achievement Award from the Student Clinicians of the American Dental Association in 2007. Additionally, he was recognized as an inductee of the Richard Doggett Dean and Marguerite Taylor Dean Honorary Society of the University of Tennessee. Moreover, he is honored to have been selected for inclusion into the American College of Dentists, and served as the Chair of the Mississippi Section. Dr. Powell attributes his success to his ability to listen to people, his work ethic and his competence to perform dental procedures as pain-free as possible.
