Harboring a longstanding interest in biochemistry, Dr. Selkirk decided to pursue a career in the sciences from an early age. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in environmental chemistry from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Selkirk began his career as a postdoctoral fellow in the McArdle Laboratory of Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
After working for the National Cancer Institute with the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Selkirk further flourished in the biology division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. For 15 years, he found success at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences before becoming appointed as the deputy director of the National Center of Toxicogenomics. Dr. Selkirk was also active as an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee, a member of the Breast Cancer Task Force of the National Institutes of Health and the chairman of the Interagency Testing Commission.
Before embarking on his career journey, Dr. Selkirk served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corp. As a respected voice in his field, he has authored several research articles and book chapters regarding his areas of expertise. Dr. Selkirk also contributed to the editorial board of professional journals such as the Carcinogenesis Journal, Cancer Research and Environmental Health Perspectives.
For his stellar efforts over the years, Dr. Selkirk was recognized among the 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century. Throughout his prolific career, he has been incredibly proud of receiving recognition for his work and research in chemical carcinogenesis. In order to remain aware of developments in his areas of interest, Dr. Selkirk has maintained his professional affiliation with the American Cancer Society.
