PFLUGERVILLE, TX, June 07, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Beverly Downing has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.
Drawing inspiration from the example of her grandmother, Ethel K. Downing, her mother Ethel Bryant, and former employers, Dr. Downing decided to pursue a college education. She enrolled in Livingstone College, Salisbury NC where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. Dr. Downing went on to earn her Master of Arts at Hampton University, Hampton, VA in 1980 as a graduate assistant in Women's Athletics.
Accepting her first appointment as an instructor of Health and Physical Education at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC, Downing served two decades at the University while progressing from instructor to tenured professor and chair of the school of education. During her tenure at Saint Augustine's Downing achieved many extraordinary accomplishments. She demonstrated her ability as a prolific grant writer earning more than $20 million dollars for the University to support her vision of creating a community health and wellness center, for professional development in educational technology for faculty, and earned recognition as leader in accreditation. The fact that she accomplished this while still excelling as a Women's Basketball Coach and member of the US Olympic Basketball Coaching staff is particularly noteworthy.
Throughout her decades of service, Dr. Downing has secured more than $50 million in grant funding at the foundation, state and federal levels, led more than 10 successful accreditation and compliance reviews and provided technical assistance to in excess of 30 public and private colleges and universities. Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, she completed The Management Development Program (MDP) at Harvard University and The American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program. Furthermore, Dr. Downing maintains her professional affiliation with Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa.
In conjunction with her work in the field, Dr. Downing contributes as the founding board chairperson of Purpose of God Annex Program, Washington, NC. For her professional accomplishments, she won several Coach of the Year Awards, a National Award through Kaplan Higher Education and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Livingstone College. In recent years, she also had a Female Athlete of the Year Award named in her honor. Though her career has been suffused with highlights, she is most proud to have led the transformation of Kentucky State University from a level three to a level five university, and bringing St. Augustine's College back to accreditation status. In the near future, Dr. Downing intends to retire from higher education to establish her own business.
