For more than a decade, Dr. Reeder led a successful career in healthcare as an intensive care unit and critical care unit staff nurse at Saint Mary's Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois, between 1961 and 1975. She subsequently accepted an opportunity to teach courses at Olivet Nazarene University, where she remained until her retirement in 2006. Transitioning into academia was a wonderful experience for her because she had small children at the time and teaching provided her with the flexibility to raise them and pursue a fulfilling career. Dr. Reeder also very much enjoyed teaching the next generation of nurses.
As a scholar, Dr. Reeder was greatly involved in research, studying the various aspects of her field while contributing to scholarly articles published in various peer-reviewed journals. Offering her expertise to her local community, she also served for two years as the president of the Kankakee County Board of Health. Dr. Reeder formerly flourished as the Vice President of the Kankakee parish Nurse Network between 2001 and 2019, serving as Faith Community Nurse for her local congregation during that time.
In her youth, Dr. Reeder had an aunt who was a nurse, whom she greatly admired and tried to emulate. After high school, she prepared for her career by earning a diploma at South Chicago Community Hospital in 1960. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing at Olivet Nazarene University in 1975, a Master of Science in nursing at the University of Illinois in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois in 1991. Dr. Reeder is likewise certified as a gerontological nurse.
As an extension of her career, Dr. Reeder has been affiliated with the Illinois Nurses Association. She was also appointed as a fellow of the Illinois Public Health Leadership Institute. Dr. Reeder was further recruited as the past president of the Kappa Sigma chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
Showcasing her expertise, Dr. Reeder was honored with a Recognition Award from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She was also the recipient of a Willis Snowbarger Award for Teaching Excellence. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Reeder has been profiled in the fourth and fifth editions of Who's Who in American Nursing and the eighth edition of Who's Who in American Education.
