Dr. Gealt has enjoyed a fulfilling career that has inspired countless generations of students as a college professor. Having begun his career as an assistant professor of biological sciences at Drexel University between 1978 and 1984, he was later promoted to an associate professor in 1984, and remained active in this role until he earned a full professorship in 1990. During this time, Dr. Gealt excelled as the director of the School of Environmental Science, Engineering and Policy from 1994 to 2000.
Dr. Gealt continued his administrative career at Purdue University Northwest, where he held the position of the dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science and a professor of biology from 2000 until 2005. Between 2006 and 2013, he was active as the dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and a professor of biology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Finally, he established himself as a staple in the Central Michigan University community as the executive vice president and provost from 2013 to 2019. He was bestowed with professor emeritus status in 2019. Throughout the course of his time at Central Michigan University, Dr. Gealt is proud to have facilitated the continuing collegial relationship between the university and the Saginaw Chippewa tribe, having collaborated on projects of mutual interest.
Ever curious about the functions of biological systems as a child, Dr. Gealt has always harbored a passion for science and biology. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Temple University in 1970, and subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1974. While completing his studies, Dr. Gealt contributed as a research associate in the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Department of Pharmacology between 1974 and 1976, and as a postdoctoral associate at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia from 1976 to 1978.
Dr. Gealt is proud to have been a selected as a grantee by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1983, 1985 and 1989, the National Science Foundation in 1981, 1994 and 1997 and the U.S. Air Force in 2002. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Academy for Microbiology. In addition, he participated on the board of directors of the EAST Initiative from 2012 to 2019. Over the span of his professional journey, Dr. Gealt has maintained his memberships with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society Microbiology, the American Society Cell Biology and Sigma Xi.
