After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from the University of Minnesota, Dr. Garfin earned a Doctor of Medicine from the aforementioned university four years later. He subsequently completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) between 1975 and 1979. He followed this with a fellowship in spine surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. The following year, UCSD recruited Dr. Garfin as an assistant professor for the school's division of orthopedics and rehabilitation, where he thrived until he was promoted to become an associate professor for the department of orthopaedic surgery at the UCSD School of Medicine in 1986.
Dr. Garfin continued to find remarkable success as a full professor at UCSD throughout the following two decades. In 1996, he was selected as the chairperson of the UCSD department of orthopaedic surgery. After excelling in this capacity for nearly 15 years, he was designated as a distinguished professor in 2011. Since 2018, Dr. Garfin has thrived as the interim dean for the UCSD School of Medicine and continues to serve as a professor of orthopedic surgery.
Throughout his 40-year career, Dr. Garfin has contributed over 300 articles to a host of medical journals and has delivered presentations all over the world. His research has garnered prestigious accolades from numerous organizations, such as the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and the Cervical Spine Research Society. As a co-founder of the North American Spine Society, as well as the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, he continues to play a vital role in expanding spinal research and promoting evidence-based methods of care. Dr. Garfin is also particularly proud to have helped develop several medical tools that have since become essential for common spinal procedures.
