Dr. Pinkel is currently a Distinguished Professor of Oceanography Emeritus at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), University of California San Diego. Dr. Pinkel earned a B.A.in physics from the University of Michigan in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego in 1974.
He began his professional career at Scripps as an assistant research oceanographer in 1975, transitioning to the academic staff in 1980, and advancing to become a full professor in 1987. He remained on the Scripps faculty until his retirement in 2015. An expert in environmental science, Dr Pinkel specializes in observations of the energy cascade in the sea, including internal waves and fine-scale motions in Arctic, mid-latitude and equatorial oceans. Starting in the 1970s, Dr. Pinkel pioneered development of Doppler sonar systems for the remote sensing of deep ocean currents. Much of this work has been conducted from SIO's Research Platform FLIP. It contributed to the development of today's commercially available Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling instruments.
During the early 2000s Dr. Pinkel led a series of field experiments in Hawaii and the nearby Pacific to study deep-ocean mixing triggered by the flow of surface tidal currents over submerged topography. Collectively called the Hawaiian Ocean Mixing Experiment, the program produced first-hand evidence of the tides generating very energetic internal waves. These subsequently break, fueling deep sea turbulent mixing. The program off Hawaii has led to many subsequent experiments, and to a new understanding of the energy cascade in the deep sea. Pinkel's work has been published in numerous scientific journals, including the Journal of Physical Oceanography, Journal of Oceanic and Atmospheric Technology, and others.
Dr. Pinkel is a member of The American Meteorological Society, The Acoustical Society of America, The American Geophysical Union, The Oceanography Society, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, and other professional societies. He has been elected fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union. He has received the Walter Munk Award from the Oceanography Society and the Henry Stommel Award from the American Meteorological Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Pinkel has been featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
