Ms. Reece celebrates a storied career as both a nurse and a nursing educator, primarily focusing on perinatal care throughout her career. Notably, she has worked as an assistant professor at the Darton College of Health Professions at Albany State University from 2009 to 2017. Ms. Reece additionally excelled as a perinatal clinical nurse specialist at Cape Fear Valley Medical Health System from 1987 to 2001, during which time she helped elevate perinatal standards in the health system to what it is today.
Ms. Reece is credited with co-developing a transportation program with Cape Fear Valley Health System to help pregnant women deliver their babies safely in a tertiary care setting. Moreover, she educated their staff on assessment skills and instructed them on which emergency drugs to administer. She assisted staff managing critical care, pregnant patients and provided ongoing educational courses as well. Ms. Reece is also proud with the development of a documentation tool for the labor and delivery unit at Cape Fear Valley Health System.
Ms. Reece was initially inspired to become a nurse because of two aunts who were nurses. She began her career in nursing in 1964 when she entered the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing and earned a Diploma in Nursing in 1967. She was subsequently hired as an infirmary nurse at Cedar Crest College in 1967. In lieu of being paid a salary, Cedar Crest College facilitated her obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1969. After taking postgraduate courses in nursing at Kent State University from 1979 to 1973, Ms. Reece enrolled at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in 1984. She received a scholarship in 1985 and instructed nursing doctorate students as a graduate assistant from 1985 to 1986. Ms. Reece earned a Master of Science with a focus in perinatal nursing in 1987.
Ms. Reece has been recognized as the Perinatal Nurse of the Year in 2010 and 2014. She has been a panelist member of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing during which she stressed matters of common interest, concern effecting public health, safety and welfare, and support for increasing the entry level for nursing licensure.
