Dr. Ettinger earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1967. He was an Intern from 1967-68 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York. He completed a three year (1968-1971) fellowship in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Following that, he spent two years in the U.S. Army as a Major at the Munson Army Hospital in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, ultimately becoming Chief of Medicine there. From 1973-75, he was a Fellow in Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and became a faculty member there in 1975. As a faculty member, over time he became the Alex Grass Professor of Oncology, Professor of Medicine, Professor of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences, Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, and Professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Ettinger has authored or co-authored more than 270 publications. In addition, he is the author of two books that discuss treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and toxicities associated with the therapies. He also authored "Supportive Care in Cancer Therapy" in a Cancer Drug Discovery and Development series and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Current Treatment Options in Oncology. Dr. Ettinger has been a member of several organizations and medical boards, including serving as President of the Maryland Division of the American Cancer Society (1994-96). He is the panel chair of five guideline panels of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the NCCN.
Dr. Ettinger has received numerous honors over the course of his more than fifty year career in medicine. These honors include the Saint George Medal in 1997, an award given to outstanding community volunteers in recognition of their distinguished service to the American Cancer Society. He also earned the Roger Winn Award for service and dedication to the NCCN in 2009. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is also a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the American Association for Cancer Research, the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, and the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group.
Dr. Ettinger counts among his career highlights his many published works as well as being Principal Investigator of the Phase 1 Studies of New Anticancer Agents funded by the National Cancer Institute(1982-90) which helped in the development of Paclitaxol, a chemotherapeutic agent used in many tumors including lung, breast, and ovary. Perhaps the most important and satisfying aspect of his career has been and continues to be the privilege of serving the patients and families whose medical needs have brought them to him.
