After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Davidson College in 1958, Dr. Tedford served three years in the Army as a Lieutenant, primarily as an Instructor in Electronics at the Guided Missile School at Redstone Arsenal. He received a Master of Science in Physics from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1963 and taught acoustics for a year at Southern Methodist University. He then received a Master of Arts and a Doctorate in Psychology from Emory University in 1966 and 1967, respectively.
After teaching at Oberlin College for two years, he returned to SMU and taught psychology and physics until retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 1997. During this period he maintained a practice in behavioral and cognitive psychology and was vice president of Psychological Services of Dallas, PC.
During his scholarly career, Dr. Tedford conducted extensive research in his field and disseminated his studies in over 30 scholarly journal articles. He also contributed a chapter in a medical book and an instructional manual and served as a reviewer for several books written by his colleagues. Furthermore, Dr. Tedford oversaw 42 master's level theses and three doctoral dissertations. Well regarded for his indelible contributions, Dr. Tedford received a fellowship from the National Institutes of Mental Health, an Andrew W. Mellon fellowship from Rice University, and a research grant from the National Science Foundation.
Adjacent to his paid positions, Dr. Tedford contributed as a member of the board of clinical advisors for the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas. Dr. Tedford has remained aware of developments in the field as a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association of Physics Teachers, the American Association of University Professors, the Psychonomic Society, the Midwestern Psychological Association, and, among others, the American College of Forensic Examiners. He has been inducted into honor societies in Physics (Sigma Pi Sigma), Psychology (Psi Chi), and Research (Sigma Xi).
He maintained his private practice until 2018, including testifying in approximately 300 trials and depositions, both for the State and the defense. These matters included personal injury, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, copyright infringement, child abuse and custody, racial discrimination, federal tax evasion, competency to stand trial, and criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to capital murder.
