Leading the industry as a talented and diverse legal professional, Judge Privett retired in 2015 as an esteemed circuit court judge for the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama after 12 years in her role. Her incredible career in the field also included several leading roles throughout the state as a licensed attorney of 48 years. Among these noteworthy positions, she was the first female to serve as United States Attorney in Alabama. Judge Privett began her career as a civil rights attorney, first with the firm of Crawford & Blacksher in Mobile, AL, in 1973, and then with the firm of Adams, Baker & Clemon in Birmingham, AL, in 1974. She then worked for the U.S. Department of Justice in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama from 1976 to 1998, serving as an Assistant U. S. Attorney, Civil Chief, First Assistant and Chief Assistant. She was appointed U.S. Attorney by the U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama in February 1995, serving until September 1997. She re-entered private practice, primarily in the area of mediation, in 1998, during which time she also served as City Prosecutor for the City of Mountain Brook. Judge Privett also taught as an adjunct professor of law at the Cumberland School of Law of Samford University from 1998 to 2006.

Committed to her community, Judge Privett is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Birmingham, Alabama. She is also involved with Leadership Birmingham, is an elder and deacon the Independent Presbyterian Church, and is a member of the Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley Commission on Ministries. Judge Privett formerly served as chairperson of the domestic violence committee for the City of Birmingham, is a former secretary and founder of the Lawyers for Choice Alabama, and is a former president and former board director for the Legal Aid Society of Birmingham.

To prepare for her career in law, Judge Privett studied at Vanderbilt University, where she acquired a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. Shortly thereafter, she achieved a Doctor of Jurisprudence at New York University in 1973. Judge Privett has been admitted to practice by the Alabama State Bar, the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Alabama, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

For many years, Judge Privett had the good fortune to be aligned with several prominent professional organizations, such as the Birmingham Bar Foundation and the Federal Bar Association as a member and past president. She is also a member and former executive committee member of the Birmingham Bar Association, a member and former executive board member of the Women Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association, a member of the American Bar Association and a former delegate to its House of Delegates, and a member and founding chairperson of the women's section of the Alabama State Bar.

In honor of Judge Privett's many career accomplishments, she has received several awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Birmingham Bar Association in 2020, the Maud McLure Kelly Award from the Alabama State Bar's women's section, an Excellence Award from the Birmingham Bar Foundation, the Nina Miglionico "Paving the Way" Leadership Award from the Women Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association, and also the Judge Drayton James Award from the Young Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association. In addition, in 2017, Judge Privett was inducted into the Vanderbilt Student Media Hall of Fame. She received the Distinguished Alumna award from the Altamont School in 2009. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been cited in the 52nd through 58th editions of Who's Who in America, the seventh and ninth through 19th editions of Who's Who in American Law, the 25th through 35th editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and the 24th through 26th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
