Ms. Gardenhire discovered her passion for teaching after her first day of work, and she is proud to say that she has enjoyed every minute of her career.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM, August 02, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan A. Gardenhire has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Ms. Gardenhire obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico in 1966. She subsequently earned a master's degree in 1968. Over the course of the following 25 years, she flourished as a high school mathematics teacher for Albuquerque Public Schools. During this period, Ms. Gardenhire found tremendous success as the chairperson of her school's mathematics department.
Though she has since retired from teaching, Ms. Gardenhire continues to thrive as a volunteer mathematics tutor. As one of the most beloved mathematics teachers in Albuquerque Public Schools, her distinguished success was previously recognized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 1984. She spent many hours working with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and continues to do so to this day. For 35 years, she has worked with MATHCOUNTS Foundation, which sponsors a series of local, regional, state and national mathematics competitions for seventh- and eighth-grade students. Ms. Gardenhire also served on the writing committee of MATHCOUNTS for three years, which she considers a highlight of her career. She has worked diligently for other state and local organizations and events, representing her state for the New Mexico Alliance for Science Education and the Mathematical Science Education Board, among others.
When asked about what qualities made her an effective and successful teacher, Ms. Gardenhire explained that it was her ability to learn with her students. For as much as she was able to teach her students, she was able to learn just as much, if not more, about them, because true learning is a two-way street. "There's more to being a teacher than reading from a book," she said, and she hopes that her story will inspire more teachers that are involved in the profession because of their great passion, as opposed to financial considerations. "In today's teaching I see so many people that just pick up a paycheck, and it just breaks my heart," she said. "I will say; there was not a day where I didn't want to go to work."
Ms. Gardenhire discovered her passion for teaching after her first day of work, and she is proud to say that she has enjoyed every minute of her career. After her retirement in 1991, Ms. Gardenhire donated her time as a volunteer tutor. Humorously, she has become known in her community as "the tutor who doesn't charge." The reason for this, as she explained, is so that she can be selective with her students. Additionally, she has discovered a passion for Lego sets following her retirement, and in the years since she has cultivated what the neighborhood children describe as "a Lego museum," featuring numerous completed sets, with more on the way as they are released. A teacher through and through, Ms. Gardenhire continues to devote herself to the betterment of children even in her retirement, and her selfless devotion to others has made the world a better, kinder place in which to live.
