Earning the distinguished title of the Fletcher Professor of the Arts Emeritus in 2013, Dr. Perry previously found success as the founder of the department of film and media culture at Middlebury College since 1978. During his tenure, he taught various courses on avant-garde film, American film, Fellini and Antonioni and other renowned directors, as well as the relationships between film and modernism in the arts. Dr. Perry has also written extensively on these topics.
Having served in academia for more than four decades, Dr. Perry was professor and chair of New York University 's Department of cinema studies from 1971 to 1975 and served as Director of the Film Department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City from 1975 to 1978. He also held teaching appointments at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, Harvard University, the State University of New York at Purchase, the University of Texas at Austin, and at his alma mater, the University of Iowa.
Well regarded as a prolific educator, Dr. Perry frequently lectured in his field. He has also served on a multitude of university and other professional committees throughout his illustrious career in academia. Dr. Perry is notably a trustee emeritus of the American Film Institute and a board adviser for the Anthology Film Archives.
A well-received writer, Dr. Perry's newest book, "The Passenger," is due out in 2022 through BFI: Bloomsbury Press Publications. He has also authored, co-authored, edited and contributed to various other books, scholarly journals and other professional publications, including "The Impulse to Preserve" as an editor through Harvard University Press in 2007 and "My Reel Story" as an author through the University Press of New England in 2001. "My Reel Story" is a memoir. "Masterpieces of Modern Cinema" is a collection of essays on Modernist films. Additionally, Dr. Perry has written and directed numerous plays, including "Fausta" in 1990, as well as writing, directing and producing 15 motion picture documentaries, many of which have been aired on such television networks as ABC and NBC. In addition, Perry and Hans Breder created and produced in Barcelona, Spain, a performance piece entitled, "When I Was a Child."
Dr. Perry received a Bachelor of Arts at Baylor University in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he completed a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa in 1966 and 1968, respectively. During his subsequent career, Dr. Perry secured several grants. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been cited in the second and third editions of Who's Who in Entertainment and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
