Dr. Cooper has accrued over 30 years of professional experience as a Research Scientist, Research Career Scientist and former Senior Research Career Scientist in the Veterans Administration (VA). Having harbored a passion for science since her formative years, she always knew that she would pursue a career in medical research. Dr. Cooper's professional journey began in 1986, at which point she was employed as a Research Scientist at J.A. Haley Veterans Hospital.
In 1991, Dr. Cooper was recruited as a Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine. Previously, she served as a research scientist in a post doctorate program at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for two years. Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Cooper has thrived in various capacities, including as a visiting scientist at the VA Medical Center in California, a grants reviewer for the American Heart Association, National Institutes of Health, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other foundations, a founding member of the University of South Florida's chapter of the National Academy of Inventors, and an organizer of the Endocrine Society Annual Meetings.
In her current roles, Dr. Cooper's performs research for the Department of Veteran Affairs, meets with her lab, designs experiments, analyzes data with her team, trains graduate and post-doctoral students and writes and publishes papers. Dr. Cooper has also conducted extensive research on the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine. She has published over 110 papers, and her research has been continuously funded by the VA, NIH, NSF and AHA during her career.
From 1995 to 2005, Dr. Cooper led a team of students and post-doctoral fellows who discovered the role of insulin signaling in regulating the alternative splicing of pre-messenger RNA. Her involvement with this profound discovery represents a particular highlight of her career. A valued voice in her field, she participates and chairs committees for J.A. Haley VA Hospital, including those for Hospital Radiation Safety, Research Safety, and Research and Development.
Dr. Cooper initially pursued a formal education at Oklahoma State University, from which she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. In 1983, she earned a doctorate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Notably, she was elected as Fellow of the American Heart Association, for which she has also served as a volunteer, presenter and Chairperson of the Research Committee for the Southeast Affiliate. Additionally, Dr. Cooper is affiliated with the Endocrine Society and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. As a testament to her stellar reputation in her field, Dr. Cooper has been presented with awards from the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Heart Association, USF, the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Looking toward the future, she intends to write a few reviews. Currently residing in Saint Petersburg, Florida, with her husband, John, Dr. Cooper enjoys traveling and playing the piano in her spare time.
