CANTON, MI, September 14, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ayana M. Walls has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Walls initially followed her mother's career path as a corrections officer, providing exemplary service as a forensic security officer, corrections officer and corrections resident representative with the Huron Valley Center and Men's Correctional Facility in Washtenaw County between 1998 and 2011. Her duties included preparing court filings for hearings of prisoners awaiting trial, investigating incarcerated grievances as part of disciplinary proceedings and obtaining fingerprints and DNA samples for input into national databases. Furthermore, Ms. Walls serves as liaison between corrections, police departments, courts and judges.
Inspired by her compassion for inmate patients who had mental health disabilities as well as long-held desire to enter the nursing profession, Ms. Walls obtained an associate degree in applied science from Washtenaw Community College in 2011. She subsequently earned a practical nursing diploma from Everest Institute in 2014 and an associate degree in nursing from Hondros College in 2018. During her third semester, her 19-year-old daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was the commencement speaker for her graduation class and received the clinical achievement award for consistent demonstration of clinical excellence, exemplary patient care and for being compassionate patient advocate from Hondro's College of Nursing. Ms. Walls is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. On August 11, 2021, she was named to the Dean's List for this semester (3.79).
Ms. Walls further operated as a licensed practical nurse with Woodland Center from 2014 to 2015. During this time, she provided mental health treatment as the first point of contact for vulnerable and underserved individuals in a correctional setting, supported substance-stricken individuals with therapy and drew blood for analysis and diagnosis. As a registered nurse with the Detroit Reentry Center from 2019 to 2020, Ms. Walls worked to improve departmental operations, assessed severity of opiate withdrawal and level of physical dependence on opioids and monitored patient progress and readiness for discharge.
Having excelled as a private duty nurse since 2019, Ms. Walls measures vital signs including height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration for in-home patients, observes patient response to prescribed medication, provides daily insulin injections and daily blood sugar checks, tracks dietary intake and ensures nutritional objectives are being met and employs clinical reasoning skills to determine when interventions are warranted. As a registered nurse with Impact Health since 2020, she provides COVID-19 testing as part of her responsibilities. Ms. Walls' core competencies include pain management, dialysis care, intravenous tubing, patient analysis, medication administration and regulatory compliance.
She has been a trustee at Inkster preparatory School where her 10-year-old attends for 5 years and she worked on the PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) committee assisting prisoners who have been sexually assaulted. In the coming years, Ms. Walls intends to become a mental health nurse practitioner. In addition, she aspires to travel to correctional facilities and employ her nursing expertise and background as a corrections officer for 15 years to teach new nursing staff how to deal with inmate patients correctly and help correction officers become more aware of their mental health needs.
